MUSIC REVIEW & RECORD COLLECTOR NOTES

Clave Rocks by Amoretto was a super freestyle era song that was all over New York in 1986. A mixture of Latin and American dance music produced by Rae Serrano and Charlie Chase.

Many may have forgotten Clave Rocks, but after one listen . . . BAM! "Oh my God, I remember this one." This song features the razor sharp edits of The Latin Rascals and was mastered by Disco veteran Jose Rodriguez.

I received an e-amail from one of the female singers and she told me that the women pictured on the record cover are not the singers, but simply models who were asked to pose for the shot.

    Hey -
I have had the pleasure to get to personally know Jeasnette Dejesus Ballou. I have seen her perform with her band several times in the Saratoga, NY region. I can only say she has the sweet, sultry singing voice of a nightingale and she dances and moves with the grace of the wind. After reading these blog entries I am glad that whatever happened in Jeanette's past did not stifle her passion and love for singing. The world and everyone who has heard or seen jeanette would have been for a great loss if it did. Jeannette has a strong sense of morals and character and many other great personal attributes and qualities that allowed her to move on and be successful in life. What she was denied in the past was paid back to her many times greater, through her beautiful , talented intelligent daughters. Jeanettes spirit to move on is incredible. For all that she was denied she has earned back through friends who care dearly for her. For those who denied her what was rightfully hers may our paths never cross. What I would like to say about Jeanette she said it herself in one of her above comments -"I believe that whatever God has planned for a person can never be changed and life is just starting!!" I find this all quite interesting, so the only thing I can say is Thank You to everyone who has brought Jeanette into my life. I hope to forever cheerish her, love her and repay her with happiness that she rightfully deserves. Thank you all for having part of bring her into my life. Jeanette remember the SECRET.

    Gracias,

    Arturo Cop

WOW!! This site is fun to read! It is supposed to be about CLAVE ROCKS! A very good song that made my rotation, and occasionally was prime time material. Excellent percussion, fantastic mix, great breaks. Guys you created some magic there, congratulations. On my scale from 1-10, CLAVE ROCKS got an 8.

    hola guapo...

my name is jeanette and i am the vocalist you hear throughout the song. i'm not sure who daisy velez is... heck... i don't know who any of them except for jessica is. she's on the cover. another girl i briefy met.. ramona bond, in the center, i knew for a bit. but she didn't lay any of the tracks down. daisy could've been one of the many that was used to lip sinc... and/or dance. hope that helps you a little.

  • El Guapo

I used to date a girl from Newark ,NJ that claimed to be in Amoretto. Her name is Daisy Velez and she is not one of the girls on the album cover so I never believed her. Can anyone clear this up?

i don't intend on commenting much more on this site. i made choices 20 years ago based on my values and what i truly wanted to accomplish musically. i do believe every thing happened and continues to happen for a reason and that God is behind the reason/s. i didn't want to compromise my values. my singing and performing background were a lot different than what rae had in mind, which is why he and i both believed the recording went over well... and the recording worked. music is and has always been my passion; it is where i feel secure and at home. all i wanted to do was sell records, and perform. i came from live performances so, what i had hoped for was trust in my voice and a kick a** band to back me up. i don't believe in lip synching, so you could imagine my surprise when i walked into two separate clubs, only to hear my voice coming out of the speakers, but it wasn't me singing!!!
i never knew that jessica was being lied to about me being sick, etc., and not showing up for performances. that was wrong.

i too signed a one page agreement, which is when i realized exactly what was going on. i was young and maybe i should've stayed and placed my foot in the door, and dealt with whatever rae wanted, but i chose not to... that would've meant doing opposite of what i believed i could do in the entertainment field.
i recorded the lead, back grounds, some harmonies that were left out (but not purposely... well, i hope not... they were very pretty). i was usually in the studio alone when i recorded my parts. i never did get to know jessica. maybe that is the way it was suppose to be... till now.
i gave rae a choice and when he didn't come through, i walked away, asking him not release my vocals. maybe he thought i was bluffing... but i wasn't and he did release the recording. i guess it's not too bad, "clave" has turned out to be one of the top 100 dance tunes of all times. i guess that's cool. it's still played... and God isn't done yet!!!

in 1989 i joined rae again. this time to record a couple of tunes on yomo toro's "gracias" album. it was a fun experience. this time things were dealt with differently... not extremely financially differently... but i did get credit on the sleeve, and i was comfortable working with yomo and the engineers.

i believe that whatever God has planned for a person can never be changed and life is just starting!!

maybe now, with jessica's (contact) help, everyone will get to hear and see what should've been heard and seen 20 years ago. i believe it will be better!!

    jeanette

by the way... the site i gave for "the accents" isn't completed yet. there will be new updated pictures and information. those pics were NOT my choices... there were better choices than the ones placed on the web. the video clips were not as professional as we would have liked... but for now i just wanted to share dates and places with you. if you click on the "public performances" tab, you can see where we will playing!

By the way... there weren't really any background voices on "Clave Rocks," just some hot cha chas... I recorded the lead, some harmonies that were pretty awesome, but weren't used... that was just a flaw... not purposely left out... the "ay papis" were a trip for me. the lights had to be turned down in the studio... but hey... it worked!

No one better than me knows what it was like to be in my apartment listening to the radio and hearing myself, except i had no recognition. The song is still heard in Puerto Rico, Florida, New York City... clubs. I grew up listening to rock, Beatles... Benatar, so I had a different feel for music than most Puerto Rican girls. I'm still singing and what I enjoy the most is touching people's hearts. I didn't get to read all of the comments submitted... just kind of skimmed when i saw Susan's comments. If I could add a pic here... I would! There must be a way. : ) Thanks to you all. I didn't want to compromise my values... so I walked away. Ciao!

The following was received from Amoretto's producer, Rae Serrana:

    Hi How are you
My name is Rae Serrano. I am the Producer and song writer of the group Amoretto ( Clave Rocks) I am so Happy that you guys Have kept the music alive. Latin Hip Hop Or Freestyle as you guys call it was meant for us Latino's in the U.S. and the World to have Our Very own Musical Language. When I first Composed Clave Rocks I put all the things and feelings that made me feel Latino. I used the one and Only !!!!!!!!Tito Puente On Timbales, I Used one of the greatest trumpet players in the world Luis "Perico" Ortiz from the Fania All Stars and I used Sergio George, On Piano and He went on to produce, La India and Mark Anthony. The Song is about The Clave Rhythm and I used the concept of that rhythm having the personality of our own Beautiful,Sexy ,Sensuous,Latin Women. I then hunted for a Phrase that is extremely Latino and I found "Aye Papi". Ayi Papi is used so much in our culture. Mothers say it to their Lil boys and Daughters say it to their Fathers, and women say it to their husbands and lovers. So you see that it is a Record that celebrates the Latin Experience and tries to bring people who are not Latino together. I felt very bad when I saw that there were producers who did not care about the music.Only The Money. They put out a series of records with out of tune lead vocals and no musicality. That is why Latin Hip Hop "freestyle" Died!!!!!!We need To bring it Back But this time with the Best that We Have to Offer!!!!!!!!!I still have the Concept of "Amoretto " Alive and I have a New Group Called S.E.R.R.A.N.O. It stands for Son,Earth, Rock, Rhythms,Afro-latin,Nature,Oneness. Amoretto will Be part of S.E.R.R.A.N.O. I Have a New Song Called Merenge Salsa Rap Sung By the Original Singer Jeanette De Jesus Ballou .Look For the new album soon.I send you all My Love and support Peace Out. Rae Serrano

P.S. I resently found out that one of my background vocalist (J. Lopez) she calls herself the duchess of Amaretto she doesnt even know how to spell the name ( Amoretto) (which means my lil loved one in italian) is trying to put out a record called clave rocks 2 with some producer out there!

She hasn't got a clue as to what the original concept was supposed to be . The real vocalist on the original record was Jeanette DeJesus Ballou (an awesome singer) If you happen to see that out there it's just a cheap attempt at trying to get attention and undue Props. She needs to go out there and become a real artist with her own concept And Name .That woman did do some background vocals but it consited of her doing a small part that I wrote that goes Hot Cha , Hot Cha Cha 4 x along with 2 other girls. So grow up and get your own concept. I'll even buy your record and support you if you get your own record.and concept. Happy Hollidays To All our fans Out There God Bless you!!!!!!! and A Special thanks to you Bernie.
    Peace and Love Rae Serrano
