NOTES ON THIS VINYL RECORD:

Another 10" release from Private Stock Records. I think Private Stock thought that the 10" would be a more popular format than the newly invented 12" single....since most of their 10" promos were released in 1976, well after the 12" had begun to be serviced to record pools and djs. Now instead of being the standard disco tool, they are merely seen as "oddball" collectables.

Reader Comments on Toga

"More" By Toga was released on a 7” single to the retail market edited down to 3:16 on the same Private Stock Label (PS-45.065)

Toga's version was a hit record in Miami's clubs at the time, I remember it was played at club Widow McCoy's, this club was among the first batch of Disco clubs that emerged in Miami during the early Disco years.

I believe it was at this club where I first saw for the first time this extended 10" version spinning on the DJ’s turntable, this extended version was impossible to get at any record shop back then, as only lucky working Deejays of the day were able to get a copy directly from the Label or through some other inside contacts, if I recall correctly Miami didn’t have any DJ Record Pools at this time yet.

The song "More" must be one of the most Disco-fied songs ever during the Disco years, in addition to this excellent version by Toga and the best known cover version released the same year (1976)by Carol Williams with the Salsoul Orchestra, I found this other versions by the following performers:

Alexander's Discotime Band, (Ariola 1976) this cover is not bad, faithfully sticking close to the original arrangement, very Disco Lounge, with the constant Hi Hat Disco drum pattern and all, jazzy synths with the electric guitar performing the well known melody, string section, Horns , Sax, and girly vocals towards the end as the song peaks and then fades away.

Shaw (London Records 1976 UK import) this version features girls whispering/singing "More" through the song, lots of congas, and heavy bass line, then the string section kicks in with the melody , jazzy synths with girly chorus "ToooTooo toooo" going along with the melody, not bad either, but as far as I remember not club material at the time.

Ac soulful symphony (Right on Records, Canada 1976) This is the cheesiest of them all, with a full girly chorus singing the complete vocal version, the strings solo are shooting for 'classical' arrangement over a slower Disco tempo, it features a lame break with some conga and short Montana type vibes.

Pearly Queen (Lita Records, Miami, Fl year ? [70's]) Pearly Queen was a local Miami Band, their cover of "More" to me sounds better today that it did back in the day, probably because this local Miami sound disappeared long ago.

As expected this version is on the Latin side, with heavy conga percussion throughout the song, nice bass line, and 70's styled synth/organ?? performing the melody, nice breakdown with lots of Congas and cowbells, the ending arrangement is very nice here too, as only the synth solo continues to play the melody slowing down in tempo and softly fading away....

I’m sure there are many other….
