NOTES ON THIS VINYL RECORD:

Sassy's "Theme From Disco '77" was produced by Ray Martinez of Amant. If you like the percussion and strings on "If There's Love
" then you'll love Sassy.

Ray Martinez was kind enough to give some background info on this record...

Lets see ... Sassy ... one day my friend and part time manager Larry Brahms, he was in charge of the music and the talent for the T.V. show 'Disco 77'. He came to the studio with the producer of the show, Steve Marcus, and they asked me if I wanted to write the theme for the show. I said agreed.

He wanted something along the line of Foxy's "Get Off Your Aaaahhhh and Dance" which I had also done. I had a week to finish it. On the way home that evening, I came up with the idea for it while driving home. I called my musicians and met with them next day to record. It was finished within the week. Steve Marcus liked it and he used it as the theme for the show.

He also wanted me to put a band together to appear on the show. I used my studio players for the live band, except the bass player, who was playing with Foxy. I wanted something different. I wanted live strings and horns, sort of like a mini Salsoul Orchestra. I used two string players from my studio regulars (one was a girl), and a horn player, Chris, who did the wonderful sax on Lady Of The Night. Added two female background singers, from my studio group, and that is how the live group Sassy was born. It was nine of us.

I have no idea where the name Sassy came from, but it just came to me on the spot when the show's producer asked me what was the group's name (I wonder where my mind was at at the moment, uuuhhmmm? Sassy .....)
That's the story behind the record.

Reader Comments on Sassy

"Theme from Disco 77" was produced by Ray Martinez (of Amant) and is a strong Miami-sounding disco instrumental from that year. It includes the drum-breaks typical of Miami disco groups from the time, like Foxy. A must for Disco-Afficionados

This was the theme from a syndicated music show out of Miami that featured a lot of T.K. artists of the day. I assume the show was short lived because here in N.Y. it only ran for about 2 months. I guess being shown at 12:30 on Saturday night did'nt help much either.
