NOTES ON THIS VINYL RECORD:

Another quality John Luongo mix, this time of the Quick's Zulu from 1981. This song tore up the charts in New York back in the day and is still well known.

"Pick up that spear and fight now that the time is right... Zulu man..."

One of my all-time top 10.

Empathetic, literate rump-shaker about the fall of British Colonialism and the beginning of African resistance and one of the bloodiest military routs in history.

The voice of the Englishman starts his lament, sort of a bittersweet answer to Paul McCartney's "Uncle Albert." The unmistakable politics of the record kick in withg a reprise of the nursery rhyme: "London Bridge is falling down..." On most mixes, these lyrics are accompanied by the wash of a Giorgio Moroder-style synthesizer.

Then, as suddenly as Zulu Dawn comes his famous inovcation, quoted by Bernie above, followed by the Zulu version of a Confederate rebel yell. Back in the day, some found this offensive, others amusing, but to those who listened to the lyrics, immensely moving.

HOT, too! The best mix (was it this one) breaks the Eurodisco down to the hardest Paradise Garage-style tribal beats. I've never heard a record bridge these styles better, especially as racial reconciliation is the theme of this record.

Just to mess your mind more, some mixes have some (white-sounding) chicks repeating late on, "The Natives...are restless...Oooh, Aaah, Oooh Aaah, Aaah" in the background, with a different, very masculne yell in the background (think Toney Lee, "D" Train, the Strikers). Absoultely top of the list; the kind of record I would use to blow away anyone who dares insist that "Disco Sucks."
