MUSIC REVIEW & RECORD COLLECTOR NOTES

Here's the famous Big Apple Mix that was everywhere in New York and even on WKTU radio. Although not credited on the label as this was a bootleg mixer, the person who mixed and edited this masterpiece of the early 80s is self-claimed to be New York DJ, Mikey D'Merola.

In December of 2011 DiscoMusic.com received several notes claiming that Mikey D'Merola was not the creator of The Big Apple Mix. We of course can not tell who actually did it, but we present a rebuttal from Tuta Aquino:

Hello,

When I moved to NYC in 1981, I started working on some special mixes and edits with my friend Julinho Mazzei. He had been producing a successful radio show for brazilian FM stations named "The Big Apple Show" for many years already. In 1982 we put together, at Julinho's studio in Westchester, a medley we named "The Big Apple Production - Vol.1". This was released as a bootleg and became an instant hit, partly due to Julinho's friend PACO, one of WKTU's top DJs at the time, that aired the medley many times! After that we ended up doing several special mixes for WKTU on their daily show named PACO's Super Mix signing off as "The Kids From Brazil".

That "original" version of "The Big Apple Production - Vol.1", was also bootlegged by different "labels", but always with our medley as its content. We went on to produce Vol.2, but this time done by 8 hands and 4 heads. We invited our friends Tony Moran and Albert Cabrera, already known as "The Latin Rascals", and produced a medley that became even more famous in the "bootleg" world. The collaboration was great and the release of "The Big Apple Production - Vol. 2" was very anticipated by record stores in the NYC metro area. It became a major hit and sold many copies.

We stopped at Vol. 2 but the "The Big Apple Production" name was so strong by then that Vol.3, Vol.4 and Vol.5 were released, none of which done either by Julinho, myself, or the Latin Rascals. We all went on with our music careers. I have what is described above as one of the sweetest memories in my early years in the music business. Those moments when we were producing these famous medleys were magical and great times!

With all this said...I hope I helped clarify the history behind "The Big Apple Production" Medleys.
Thanx.

Tuta Aquino
