MUSIC REVIEW & RECORD COLLECTOR NOTES

For some Lipstique's "At the Discotheque" is considered a work of art, but I haven't been able to warm up to this even after all these years. I don't hate it and actually think that instrumentally it is very good, it's just the vocals/lyrics that make it cheesy in some parts. Check it out for yourself and decide.

Being a real disco dj back in the 70s made me quite aware of what the general public likes to hear, and what they respond to, and its not always what we would think. This album never really took off in the popular mainstream, and at the time, I had wondered why. It was because it was drawn out in vocals that made a soft romantic interlude of a danceable tune, and then went hyper in the fast break, than back to the melodic sound again. It was too choppy, and the break was swell and could have been extended, as well as some of the excessive vocals could have been cut for a more hyper sound all around from beginning to end.

Can't agree with you dancer56. That would destroy, what is in my opinion, a work of art. Besides, I recall a radio edit (done by a mate of mine), and I did one a few years ago too.

The other thing is the idea that the "Our song of love" part brings to the track. It's the late night/early morning, when slower numbers have been played in the club, and the 'lovers' are still there, content to be with one another and go on and on dancing until almost sunrise.
Here, the writer knew fully about the disco-going public (nothing much has changed), and conveyed this incredibly well in an epic story/production.

The music is actually great but those vocals are laughable.

This song isnt bad if it is remixed, and thats the whole problem. With all due respect to Mr. Moulton, it needed more intro vocals and more remix of the musical break to really work.
Our Song of Love and I'm Still Dancing parts could have been deleted entirely because these two parts drip with oversentiment that brings down a rather lively song with a catchy bassline.
