An innovative and very influential track from the French group Martin Circus. Disco Circus has been sampled many times since and continues to be as fresh sounding as it was in 1979.

Reader Comments on Martin Circus

The best track, in my own humble opinion, is not Disco Circus at all, but "Ite Missa Est". To me, it falls in the same category as "War dance" by Kebekelektrik".

And for those who remember the "Marathon" disco in Kijkduin, Den Haag, Netherlands: yes, "Ite Missa Est" was their signature tune.

I have this album and I also have the original version on Vogue records. You might find it interesting that the vogue pressing has a sped up version of "Disco Circus"(it's very noticeable)Also,the cut "Before It Gets Dark" is sung in its original language,French. I can't read French, but the album appears to be the soundtrack to a movie of some sort. Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Can anyone PLEASE tell me what "Ite Missa Est" means?

I have been wondering for decades!!

Yes, Disco Circus was originally the soundtrack of a movie starring the Martin Circus themselves. It was a comedy movie showing them during their military service..."Bidasses in ramble" was the title !

ite=?
missa=holy mass
est=is

To be compared to the construction of the phrase: "errare humanum est" (error-human-is)(=mistakes are human)

You're right Philippe! I finally got around to checking out Martin Circus on the IMDB website.Very interesting.Thank you!

"Ite missa est" == "Go, it is the dismissal". Traditional end to the Catholic Mass, whence the name Mass itself came. (per pikiwedia, I'm obviously not Catholic...) The tag I got with this one says "Musique originale du film: ``Les Bidasses en vadrouille'' Remastered by Frans van de Kamp"

Disco Circus was definately waaaay ahead of it's time. It was to me, one of the last true disco records, because after 1979, the term disco was becoming a thing of the past, and the term "Dance Music" was beginning to take it's place.

I still have my two original copies of the L.P. You had to have two back then so you can extend that world's famous breakdown in the middle: "DUM, DUM, DUM, DA, DUM, DA, DA, DA, DUM, DUM, DUM, DA, DUM"!!! Although the covers are a little beat up now, the vinyl still plays clear as a bell!!!

This cut can still turn a party out. One of my favorite mixes that I used to do is extend the drums & percussion part, then slide in Raze's: "Break for Love". HEAVENLY!!!
