MUSIC REVIEW & RECORD COLLECTOR NOTES

Here's a Peter Jacques Band rarity brought to us by the folks over at Prelude Records. In what at first appears to contain a single LP actually contains two 12 inch singles of the entire LP. You may ask, why they did this? One has to remember that back then only so much audio information could be squeezed into the grooves of a vinyl record. The longer (time-wise) it was the more compression required. This would translate into less bass and high frequency and more distortion.

The original Peter Jacques Band album, Fire Night Dance, was pressed with two songs on each side. Two very long songs I might add. The promo only release featured here contains one song per side on two discs..

The two most frequently played Disco songs from this album were "Walking On Music" and "Fire Night Dance." That's not to say that the other two weren't any good. On the contrary EVERY song here is a smoker.

The genius behind the music was Jacques Fred Petrus who many may remember also was involved with Macho (I'm A Man & Roll), Change (Searching) and Rudy Trevisi (White Room. That Italian Disco sound is unmistakable. It's characterized by scorching guitars, multiple breaks and an overall funky sound.

Some of these songs now appear on the Italian CD The Very Best of Peter Jacques Band.

    Continuing Bernie's commentary:

There were 11 promotional 2x12" packages issued. The Peter Jacques Band set pictured above was the first. The remaining 10 in order of catalog number were:

    Sticky Fingers PRL D 161 and PRL D 162; Theo Vaness (Bad Bad Boy) PRL D 500 and PRL D 501 (beginning the 500 number series); Martin Circus PRL D 502 and PRL D 503; U.N. PRL D 505 and PRL D 506; Saturday Night Band (Keep Those Lovers Dancing) PRL D 507 and PRL D 508; France Joli PRL D 509 and PRL D 510; Masquerade (Pinocchio) PRL D 511 and PRL D 512; L.A.X. PRL D 513 and PRL D 514; Musique (II) PRL D 515 and PRL D 516; Theo Vaness PRL D 517 and PRL D 518.

Only the second Theo Vaness, U.N. and Musique (with the fabulous cut "Glide") were issued with white labels. The rest were issued with the usual multicoloured labels. It is interesting to note that these sets were issued almost consecutively, indicating possibly a move (subsequently given up) by Prelude of issuing promotional material from dance-oriented LPs in this 2x12" format.

Relentless, frantic Eurodisco, melodic and competently played. But the BPMS suggest Chic on crystal meth. A record to giggle over.
