First off, I don't have a favourite Disco song or a top Disco list of any kind. However Love Insurance by Front Page (Sharon Redd) is an all-time favorite for me and would rank as #1 or #2 depending on my mood that day. As far as I am concerned, it's a virtually perfect Disco record.
The blend of Sharon Redd's vocals, the killer percussion and the swirling sounds make this record a must have. This is Disco!
The vocals on this Front Page track were by the late and incomparable Sharon Redd who previously sang with Bette Midler's Harlettes. As many of you know, she also had some killer hits on Prelude Records with Beat the Street and In the Name of Love. Eric Matthew also had a hand on this.
Rick Gianatos was the remixer on this project and he told me several years back that he wasn't sure that Sharon Redd was giving her "all" vocally on this song. Although he knows better, I still feel her vocals on "Love Insurance" is first rate. Here's what Rick told me:
"Love Insurance" by Front Page. Although I have always loved Sharon Redd's voice, she never did anything for me on that song. I always have felt a slightly more soulful performance (not a Martha Wash diva, but just a couple of drops of warmth) would have added so much to that song.
Sharon Redd passed away years ago from what is believed to have been AIDS, but one person who knew her told me otherwise: Sharon had stepped on a piece of glass while performing on stage in her bare feet. The resulting cut was not properly taken care of and a serious infection occured, which later resulted in her death. It's been said that Sharon Redd once performed Love Insurance in a club dressed as an insurance agent wearing a business suit and then threw out papers that looked like an insurance policy to the audience that said Love Insurance as she performed!
An edited version of Love Insurance is finally available on a CD entitled Super Rare Disco 2. Grab it.

It's true. Sharon and I had been friends since we met at an after hours Club called Ginos, around 1973 when she was then touring with Bette as a Harlette. Fast forward to Love Insurance. Sharon was living with me in Hollywood when she recorded it. I don't recall the name of the club but, she did indeed dress up in a suit and throw out insurance policies. We made copies of my insurance policy with IATSE. It was a great night! I miss my friend.

Mar 20, 2008 | 5:11 pmBernie, are you telling me that in a time of an unbelievable amount of Anti-biotic and Penecilyn , SHARON died from a cut? Hard to swallow, but possible. Anyhow, as you have told me, Everyone's tastes vary. You like this DISCO CLASSIC as the number 1 or 2 record of DISCO, all-time!! WOW! You put it ahead of some of THE TRAMMPS' songs, ahead of POUSEZZ, ahead of TURN THE BEAT AROUND and countless others. Well readers, if that statement by the guy who has put this site together doesn't tell you HOW GREAT THIS SONG IS, what could I say other then it gets a TEN on my scale .

Mar 13, 2008 | 5:46 amThe version on Super Rare Disco is ok if you can't get a hold of the 12" vinyl, but it is an edited version. I agree with Bernie that this is one of the best, if not the best, disco record ever made. It's just so uplifting and, along with Debbie Jacobs 'Don't You Want My Love', is my first equal favourite disco record. It is just perfect in this mix. Very interesting to hear what Bernie has to say about Sharon's vocals too because I agree with him that they are fantastic. But I have heard from someone that Sharon herself was never entirely happy with them. She is one of my favourite female vocalists of all time, and tends to be forgotten. Her Prelude stuff was all fantastic too - 'Beat The Street', 'In The Name Of Love', 'Never Give You Up', 'Love How You Feel' - all classics.

Feb 03, 2007 | 10:16 amAfter 25 years, disco's hooks are in way too deep for me to possibly name a favorite record; I'm tongue-tied until you stat talking "favorite 100!" That said, I can't really name a BETTER one.
Miss you, Sharon!
