"You're Too Late" by Fantasy is a song one never gets tired of hearing. Produced by Tony Valor who also worked with Soccer as well as putting out his own material on Brunswick and Paula Records.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Tamm E. Hunt who was the lead singer of Fantasy and was able to get some background info.
The group Fantasy was named the #1 Disco group in the Billboard Year End Awards 81/82. The group members were
TAMM E HUNT lead singer
KEN ROBERSON background/choreographer,
RUFUS JACKSON background/lead
CAROLYN EDWARDS background.
Luci Martin and Norma Jean who were both former leads for CHIC did perform background vocals along with Clare Bathe from MACHINE.
I asked Tamm how it was to work with Tony Valor and this is her reply:
"Working with Tony Valor was an education. (smile) he had an idea and he made it happen. So...he could be controlling and I was not always controllable. Especially on stage. So we had our moments. (smile)
Tony Valor was or is a business man, he's a lawyer now and a publisher. He was always smart and with that did what he had to do to make the group successful. He indeed assembled the group, not unlike other well known acts i.e. TLC, EN VOGUE, THE TEMPTATIONS, CHIC, CHANGE the list goes on, he called auditions and tried different combinations of people. It started off with Rufus, Kenny and me and then he decided we needed another girl to balance Kenny and Rufus in the background and when Rufus did his lead Carolyn and I draped Kenny. It's was all business and egos and madness. the ultimate theatrical piece. The entire thing was a figment of his imagination and he had a really vivid imagination and set out to manifest his dream. I respect that. I was one of the paint brushes that made it manifest. we had fun.
We didn't always see things in the same way. But quietly we had a secret admiration for one another. Together we were winners, but we each knew that separately we could win also. It was a good combination. John Loungo was the interstitial...the fibrous tissue that made Tony valor and Tamm E Hunt work. He understood us both when we each didn't understand the other. A great intermediary... John Loungo was a dreamer too. He was a powerful force, he could make it happen. A visionary is what I would call him. He saw beyond Disco and it was evident in the way he mixed records. The sound was very Pop oriented with a rock edge. The repetitious drum beats is what made it have the Disco edge. The music was oriented for the European market where it was a big success. I recognized it when we were in Paris and Rome..."

This song hit #1 on Billboard's Hot Dance Music !
On the song "You're Too Late" by Fantasy, FONDA RAE is the uncredited lead vocalist of the song, not Tamm E. Hunt. The group was assembled only after that song became a hit.
This is a special group. I am INTIMATELY connected to them. I've known Tony Valor for over 33 years. My wife is the CURRENT lead singer for FANTASY! So when I tell you that FANTASY was around before YOU'RE TOO LATE, you should realize that I know what I'm talking about. MMACE63, you are wrong!I can't remember the title, but in 1979 or 1980 they had a huge DISCO hit as well. YOU'RE TOO LATE was one of their best. It ruled atop of my charts for over three months. It packed my dance floors, and gave energy to everyone around. Great remix song too. I created magic with the LIVE remixes I performed to it. On my scale from 1-10, it gets a TEN!!!
vyniljunkie, that's all well and good, but the fact remains FONDA RAE did the lead vocals for that song. I didn't say anything about her leading the group. She was never an official part of the group 'Fantasy' but she IS the lead singer on that specific song. And THAT is a FACT. :) Plus you can verify it with Fonda herself, who has said it in interviews. (Although anyone who knows her voice knows that's her singing "You're Too Late" with or without her confirm) Not to mention, none of the other songs sound like that vocally - with Tamm E's lead. (and I have the lps) Another point: I suppose in the case of Blackbox, just because French 'model' Katrin Quinol says she is the lead singer, Martha Wash was lying, even though everyone knows Martha's voice as well?
I agree with you that FONDA RAE was the LEAD singer, it is obvious! My contention was that the group wasn't "Assembled" only after the song became a hit. The group FANTASY was already in existence prior to YOU'RE TOO LATE!! This was their first hit!! But there were other earlier releases. Glad to share that with you, a die-hard Fonda Rae fan. She is excellent isn't she!!
You'll never be heard if you don't post...
