The above Patrick Cowley 12 inch is the original release on Fusion Reords. A slightly different version of "Menergy" was released in 1983 on the Megatone label with a Tommy Williams Megamix on the flipside. This was a special collectors edition with all proceeds going to research for the then "relatively unheard" of "AIDS" virus. This is the same virus that took Patrick Cowley's life in the early 1980s.
Check out Patrick Cowley's 15 plus minute megamix of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" or anything by Slyvester to hear his signature sound. He also did a rather hard to find remix of "Funky Town" by Lipps Inc. and "Hills of Katmandu" by Tantra. The late Cowley definitely was the "Synth Meister." Groups such as The Pet Shop Boys, New Order and The Farm have credited Cowley as having had a major influence on them.
Have to admit that I was in my senior year of high school in 1981 when "Menergy" came out and it didn't dawn on me until much later that this was an obviously gay song. What can I say? I'm a niave hetero who doesn't listen to lyrics very well.

Apr 16, 2008 | 5:20 pmVyniljunkie, what in gods name are you smokin?? "Menergy" was a HUGE gay anthem...really so in the San Fran circut at the time.
"Lay All Your Love On Me" was as well, but not an all around "gay" anthem. The ABBA cut was an anthem to all scenes.

Mar 08, 2008 | 12:40 pmFor a young gay man fresh out of high school, this WAS an anthem...at least to my ears in the small club I frequented in New Orleans. And in early Spring of '82 it DID get people on the floor there Perhaps, though, we can distinguish between "anthems" and capital "A" "Anthems". I propose Lay All Your Love On Me is an Anthem.

Mar 06, 2008 | 7:47 amYou guys are so GAY, this wasn't an anthem, LAY ALL YOUR LOVE ON ME was an anthem. This was a very good record that burned in GAY clubs, and in some straight ones as well. I admit to playing it very often, it was a good dance record that kept the dancers on the floor. But it couldn't get the party started, just maintain it. understand? On my scale from 1-10 it gets a 8.

May 23, 2004 | 9:11 pmOne of the first gay anthems I heard shorlty after leaving High School in 'spring of '82. Short of "I Feel Love", this was the 1st synth/sequencer song I learned to identify..."Take you Home" always sounded tropical/Hawaiian to me...its funny to think of those pretty female voices of the Patrick Cowley Singers crooning about "Boys in the Back Room".

Jan 28, 2004 | 9:18 amThis disc should really be listed as a 2-sided hit, i.e. "Menergy b/w I Wanna Take You Home", as both sides were huge hits. The record (listing both sides) was number one for 3 weeks on Billboard's disco chart in November, 1981.

Jimmy I smoke anything!! Got some grass off my yard earlier!! Okay, you convinced me. You're right!! I'll toke to that!!
