Reader Comments on Risque

Risque was the spin-off to the group around English singer Debbie Jenner -better known as Doris D.- who also was the face to ‘Funky Town’ by studio band Lipps Inc. Aside ‘Burn It Up, Mr D.J.’ Risque recorded at least six singles from which one, titled ‘Starlight’ if I remember right, even reached the US Billboard charts. Most of their releases sounded more or less alike: some kind of post-disco sound with extensive sound effects and little vocals as they were really only a backing group.

The Pins (as they were called forming a group with Doris D) have not sung one note in this group. They were dancers like Debbie Jenner. (Doris D). When Funkytown of Lipps Inc. became a big hit the record company needed a face to playback this act. It became such a huge succes and after Funkytown Debbie recorded another song in exact the same line of the mentioned tune. This was called "Shine Up". The Pins only had to dance because their own voices sounded very weak and did not have the sound the producers wanted. After the Pins split from Doris D they formed their own group "Risque". Also they took singing lessons. The first 3 singles where quite similar in their way but after Yvonne left the group and was replaced by professional singer Denise they had a really good lead singer. Remember, Risque was born out of need and they where originally dancers not singers. After this the sound changed and they were extremely professional as a group. Unfortunately big succes stayed out. They definaltely deserved better!!!
