MUSIC REVIEW & RECORD COLLECTOR NOTES

A so-so track at best by the Softones. Flip the record over for the superb "Love Is the Answer" by Van McCoy. If we take the catalogue number for what it is then it appears as if this would have been Hugo and Luigi's first 12 inch single.

This one one of thier great song but, they released a album in the summer of 1982 or 1983 with some nice cuts on it. Been trying to find it. Dose anyone remember the name of it.

The Softones are: Marvin Brown (lead), Elton Lynch and Steve Jackson. Above cut recorded at Media Sound Studios, New York. Engineer: Gilbert Kong. Produced by: Hugo and Liugi. LP and 12" cuts exactly the same. The 12" above was released prior to the LP (HL-69108), i.e. 1976 vs. 1977.

"So-so?" Yeah, I suppose it's not terribly inspired. But it's well enough done, considering how deliciously campy the song was to begin with!

I must be tone deaf. Bernie calls this a "so-so track at best" and I have always loved this song. I recently put it on a mixed CD for a friend and he told me he had to skip by it because the guy singing sounded like an Idol reject? I think I spent too many years with a head phone stuck in my left ear. It's still one of my favorites from that period though.

THE SOFTONES "That old black magic" of 1976 is a disco version of the same classic song, it's also the first 12" single on Hugo and Luigi's H&L label (Van McCoy).
