Jean Carn (Carne) got her start singing Gospel in her native Atlanta and later started singing with Earth, Wind and Fire.
Time for some Philly Sound from Jean Carn. "Was That All It Was" is a classy and beautiful song produced by Jerry Butler and John Usry.
In 1990 an artist by the name Kym Mazelle did a horrible cover of Jean Carn's classic and is to be avoided.

Jan 04, 2009 | 5:33 amWhile Jean's is, indeed, the definitive version - Kym Mazelle's is fantastic, and the David Morales "Def Mix" is considered a House Music classic. People need to be careful when they call things "horrible" and "to be avoided" - it calls into questions their taste and credibility. My recommendation is - if you haven't heard the tune, check out all versions (including the equally enjoyable Hannah Jones take mentioned in an earlier comment). I think you'll find out that a great song remains a great song - regardless of who's performing it. And, in my humble opinion, all three ladies mentioned here each did a stellar performance in her own style.

Jun 26, 2008 | 4:44 amYou are OUT OF YOUR MIND if you think Kym Mazelle's
version is "to be avoided". Her remake is a part
of the single most influential mix cd sets in house
history. Maybe I need to bring you up to speed, but
there is a duo that has made timeless music and
mixes for over 15 years by the names of Sasha
and John Digweed. Her remake closed the second disc
of Renaissance: The Mix Collection. Arguably, the
greatest mix of our time. I'm not dismissing Jean's
original, as Kym's version would never have been
made without it. However, both deserve credit in
the highest regard.

Apr 02, 2008 | 7:25 amI saw Jean live at a small club in Camden Town, London in the Early 90's, she was brilliant. Also I don't think Kym Mazelle's version was bad. Just jeans was so good. She also had hits particularly # Wait" (duet with Dr. Robert of The Blow Monkeys) (1989) UK #7
# "Got to Get You Back" (1989) UK #29 Got to get you is a clasic Club hit. Mazele sung with Soul 2 Soul in the early 80's

Mar 06, 2008 | 3:29 amWhile it was a standard barer in many DISCOS, and was played in a heavy rotation in most clubs, I am not sure I can call this soulful record a DISCO CLASSIC. It certainly was a monster record, getting PRIME TIME action, but to list it amongst the best might be too much. Still on my scale from 1-10 it gets a 9.

Jun 14, 2007 | 10:33 amJean Carn, one of the sultry PIR singers. This was her signature song and one of my all time disco favorites. She can work the vocals to mesh with the lush backround orchestration that likely consisted of Salsoul, MFSB, TSOP musicians... This recording was beautiful example of real hustle disco music. I can picture the routines performed by latin symbolics dancers and all those talented dancers at Starship, Ipanema, Copa, and the Boom! She had sang several more core dance tracks that followed.

Jun 10, 2007 | 2:48 pmIn 1999, Hannah Jones did a great job of remaking this classic of "Was that all it was"

Indeed, one of the mixes of this track was a real club classic around '90; as played in the legendary Belgian club "Boccaccio". The version played there was like the "DEF MIX DUB" by Morales, allthough it is not 100% that one. It's a non-vocal version. Does anynone know that version? I'm unable to track it down.
