If ADVENTURES IN THE LAND OF THE GOOD GROOVE sounded a lot like CHIC with touches of modern rock thrown in for good measure ; this follow-up is pretty much the opposite. In fact the only CHIC alumna featured here is ALFA ANDERSON (back vocals on LET'S GO OUT TONIGHT).
Sure the CHIC sound is found in various forms and sounds, but you can mostly find the kind of stuff Rodgers explored on the discs he produced for Madonna, Sheena Easton and David Bowie.
It's a nice melange of styles... STATE YOUR MIND is a clear stand-out. Slower than his usual stuff with the vocodered effects and the nice funky bottom; it's my favorite track from the album.
The keyboards and the beat boxes added to his trademark guitar work create a new canvas.
Traces of modern rock and neo-soul can be found on the rockier material like DOLL SQUAD and PLAN-9.
THE FACE IN THE WINDOW is powered by a great "ROCK-IT" inspired drum loop.
Side B is funkier and LET'S GO OUT TONIGHT is an almost oriental-groovy jam is a great way to start side 2.
GROOVEMASTER, complete with vocoder effect is pumping healthily. Nice guitar riff and percussions by the way.
STAY OUT OF THE LIGHT is a nice mellow funky affair. Light airy Nile-guitar on top of a smooth beat box ; is modern and traditional at the same time.
Nice set even though I preferred the previous album.
But it is Nile Rodgers and it is worth investigating for sure.
