Back in the late 1960s, American-born, but Canadian bred Nanette Workman left Broadway and the U.S. to follow her latest paramour , Tony Roman. Together they became the Sonny & Cher of Quebec... (their cover version of "Little Man" was a HUGE hit).
After leaving for Europe ; she hooked up with The Rolling Stones [Nanette is the female voice you hear on "Honky Tonk Woman") and sang back vocals for Johnny Hallyday & Peter Frampton.
Back in late 1975 ; she returned to Quebec and was encouraged to record a french version of LaBelle's "Lady Marmalade." It was the start of a red hot streak of disco hits for her.
Hard to believe (due to the length of these songs), but with "Crying, Crying","Save Me" and "If it Wasn't For the Money" ; her status as Quebec's Queen of Disco was cemented.
Although these are more uptempo, at times funky tracks ; they were reviewed in Billboard.
After she and co-writer Finaldi refused an offer to open for Paul McCartney & Wings (feeling that they were not ready for such a huge task) - Big Tree-Atlantic dropped her from the label.
It's hard to imagine what might have been... That said - Nanette is still a huge star in Quebec. She now sings the blues and has just released her autobiography yesterday (November 11, 2008).
