Eugene Record

The CHI-LITES were one of my favorite groups growing up. Their soul-full renditions would gravitate you to the dance floor, usually with some fine-assed MAMACITA. While they would be singing, HAVE YOU SEEN HER, I would whisper along, not loud enough to be heard of course, didn't want to ruin such a great song. These are my favorite memories of Eugene, the happy, successful days. There were bad days, tough times. Eugene used those times, as a catalyst to write, and perform with more energy and desire. He let his hurt come through, loud and clear for everyone to hear and enjoy. The notes that he could hit, his range as a vocalist were superb. Yet we forget that he produced a number of other acts and artists. He was an excellent arranger, a classy man, who is missed, GOD BLESS>

I'm so very disappointed to know that it is almost impossible to find any of his records on Compact Disc. I have the vinyl of his record "Trying to Get to You" and would like it on CD, but I can not find it anywhere. How sad that such a talented individual could have somehow fallen through the cracks in the music industry. I truly loved his voice.

I had a one in a life time experience of sharing the same elevator with Eugene Record.

It was the summer of 1991 when the Chi-Lites gave a rare 3 nights performance at the Kasbah, Mandarin Hotel in Singapore. The concert had ended late and I decided to leave the venue in a hurry as I had work the following day.

To my great surprise, whilst rushing for the elevator, the door was held ajar for a couple of mins and, and lo and behold, the Chi- Lites came into the elevator and there they were, the people whose music I grew up to standing beside me. I was truely amazed though I regretted that I should have got their autographs.

I should have trusted my instinct then to have allowed them, one of the world's greatest musicians to autograph my T-shirt. I still remembered Eugene greeting me with a soft spoken smile and it was then that I knew and felt his warmness and sincerity which were the signature of his music.

I had the strangest urge to listen to his music yesterday and decided to check the web on his current status. I had missed the Grammies and was indeed shocked to learnt that this music legend had passed on.

I'm truely glad though that he had spent his remaining years after the Chi-Lites as a born again Christian and found the true meaning of life with God.

I'm quite certain that with the current music standards, no one or group is able to emulate this music legend and the music industry mourns the lost of a great music icon thats simply...."Too Good To be Forgotten!" George Lim, Singapore

Although I never met him, I always felt a connection to him through his music. He was a very gifted musician who had the unique ability to express himself lyrically & melodically.

In his immortal words: "Tears cannot express my grief, nor words my loneliness" (A Lonely Man).

Eugene Record, rest in peace!

I too was shocked to learn about the death of Eugene Record on the Grammy's. I had seen him on the PBS special and they announced it was the first time in years that all the members had performed together. I was hoping they would reunite and tour together. It was an amazing performance on PBS. He looked great and his voice was perfect! I am angry that his death didn't get the publicity and recognition of other entertainers who recently passed away.

I am just in shock Eugene Record has passed. I read the obituaries and fact that I received this news 6 months after the his death( on the Grammeys) is crime against humanity.
Record was an giant of soul and popular music who never received his due. He was one of the great singer songwriters of the era.
Luckily, artists have continued to draw from the well he filled with his music.

R.I.P. - Eugene Record

I just saw this gentleman performing (for the first time in years) with The Chi-Lites on a PBS TV special a few short months ago and now he's gone. Unreal the way things happen. he was a tremendous artist/writer/PRODUCER.
