Reader Comments on Alfonso Ortega

I had the pleasure of hearing Poncho Play music at Baby'O in the late 70's and mid 80's. He possesed a wonderful deep voice that truly shined over the loudspeakers at Baby'o. His brother Luis Ortega used to also play and each of them had a signature sound to their style and mixing. I always thought that Poncho had more of a pop-rock edge to him and that Pepe (Jose Luis) had more of a funky, disco and soul style.
Poncho was a great guy, I will always have fond memories of those great days at Baby'O during the best time in history which was the 70's and 80's. Most of all I believe that a DJ's job is to musically educate the crowds to what is good and to make people feel like they have slipped out of the world and all it's troubles, even if it is only for a few hours.
Jose Luis if you check this post from time to time i would love to hear from you if you have some time, I enjoyed to listen to you play all the time and I never really got to thank you for playing a song just for me at a club which in my opinion was not right for you, Cats. The song you played for me was Grooving You by Harvey Mason. Cheers and God Bless You ! Colourzone DJ. Toronto, Canada.

I met Poncho Ortega when I distributed records at the Floria Record Pool in Miami. He would occasionally play in Miami, but belonged to our record pool while spinning in Mexico. We would ship him the latest records weekly. He had a way about him, an attitude of friendliness that was contagious. I only heard him play once, I think it was at EL CENTRO LATINO, a Cuban night-club off the outskirts of Hialeah. Mostly SALSA, but he would mix in DISCO every half-hour or so. His mixes were all sharp and accurate cuts. I don't know what caused his death, but I'm sorry he is gone. Thanks.

I met Alfonso in 1977 at Baby'O. We were friends through the years until after he moved back to Acapulco from Houston.

He was one of a kind. The BEST DJ I ever heard and a dear friend. He always listened to me, let me hang out with him, and let me help pick the music up in the DJ booth. My visits to Acapulco would not have been the same without him. A perfect gentleman in every way at all times.

If there's a disco in heaven, they've got a hell of a DJ.
