Syreeta Wright

August 3, 1946 - July 6, 2004

Syreeta Wright Syreeta Wright Muhammad was best known for her work with Stevie Wonder and Billy Preston.

The following message is from Syreeta's friend Sibongile West:

"To those who love her...

My Beloved friend, Syreeta Wright passed away today, July 6th, 2004, after a 2 year struggle with bone cancer. To say she will be missed is an understatement. She leaves a family of 2 daughters and 2 sons, grandchildren, her mother and sister and a large host of friends who dearly loved her for her sweetness, humor and the optimism she gave the world. Her angelic voice was just a mere reflection of the beautiful soul she embodied. We love you Syreeta."

I heard her first on IF YOU REALLY LOVE ME by Little Stevie Wonder. She also sang duets with various other artists, including BILLY PRESTON. Their ballad, WITH YOU I'M BORN AGAIN was released in 1977, but wasn't a hit for a couple of years. Then it just took off, a number one R&B single. For a long time I played this song, maybe five years total. A ballad every now and then was mandatory at some clubs, and at proper times. This was one of the ones I played.

As greats leave us who will carry the Torch? I never saw Syreeta on a red carpet or on ET but i knew her voice before i knew how to read. Stevie Wonder ' if you really love me" was the first time i heard her magnificent voice. Her voice is one of the most beautiful sounding voices ever. I heard she was originally supposed to replace Diana Ross in the supremes. Her first song I can't Give back the love credited to Rita Wright was an amazing Ashford and Simpson song. My Fave songs are Lets Make A Deal w/ G.C. Cameron from the Thank God Its Friday movie and Rich Love Poor Love Duet album and Can't Shake Your Love(Paradise Garage) Set My Love In Motion, Blame It On The Sun and To Know You Is To Love you from her debut lp an amazing duet with Steve Wonder.

All I can say is Syreeta was one talented lady. If you can find it, check out ''Stevie Wonder Presents Syreeta'', and you'll see why she was bad enough to hang with Stevie.

I remember her voice on so many songs. "Every little thing about you" and "With you I'm born again" and one song I am going to put on the turn table as soon as I log off here is, "Happiness". That song is one of my all time favorites. I am saddened by her passing. My sympathy goies out to her family.
