So little about this man. Have we forgotten him, or is it simply that most don't even know of him. VAN McCOY was the real thing, he was the man. DISCO and the HUSTLE were his toys. He played with it, and shared with us. From ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, New Jersey, VAN McCOY gave us groups and acts like THE STYLISTICS, SHIRLEY, THE MOMENTS(later RAY GOODMAN and BROWN), THE WHATNOTS and others. He arranged and produced them. But it was as a recording artist that he really made a name for himself. His hits include the famous DISCO CLASSIC, THE HUSTLE!! This helped put DISCO on everyone's lips, and the HUSTLERS on the Dance Floor. This DANCE was a sort of fusion between salsa dancing, the swing dances of the 40's, and the day's R&B moves. It was danced as a couple, not as individuals. It featured choreographed moves, with lots of spinning, and visually pleasant moves. There were HUSTLE contests nation -wide. Every DISCO featured a HUSTLE contest, with winners getting prizes. From money and trophies to vacations and television appearances. The HUSTLE WAS EVERYWHERE!!! Other Van McCoy hits include LOVE IS THE ANSWER, YOU LITTLE TRUSTMAKER, plus everything, all those hits The STYLISTICS had in the early to mid-seventies. VAN McCOY deserves to be in the HALL OF FAME. I remember when he died, that it was blamed on a "mysterious" ailment. On this site, they say it was heart failure. The talk was that it was one of the first cases of AIDS. Obviously just a rumor. GOD BLESS VAN McCOY!!

I wanted to be sure and log in a comment on Van because he certainly deserves recognition for his contribution to disco music. "The Hustle", although not his first hit record, was perhaps his biggest hit. It propelled a national, if not worldwide, dance craze. I remember walking into clubs, hearing the intro to the song and the rush of dancers running to the dance floor to line up to do "The Hustle". Van also wrote and produced other groups, such as Faith, Hope and Charity, Brenda and the Tabulations as well as having albums under his own name. Other hits of his included "Little Bit of Love", "To Each His Own", "Mellow Me", "You Little Trustmaker", and "This is It".
