Mar 03, 08 | 5:41 pmWebster Lewis, the conductor for the LOVE UNLIMITED ORCHESTRA. That would be enough for some. Not WEBSTER LEWIS. He was a true musician who has worked with virtually every big name in music. I am not as familiar with all his work, but I know of his work, GOD BLESS.

Oct 28, 07 | 7:06 pmI have the fondest memories of the many shows I recorded with and for Webster and the 'Post Pop Bepop Gopel Tabernacle Chorus and Orchestra of the New England Baptist Church' as he called the touring band then hahaha! Webster Stan Strikland, Bobby Alyrio Lima and all the other amazing Jazz and Fusion artists brought more soul brotherhood and love to those shows than I have ever seen before or since, in my almost thirty years in the music business. Webster gave me the gift of music and made me believe that Love is the way, lessons that continue to serve me in good stead. I miss him and his Hammond,
Drew

Oct 18, 07 | 3:47 am(I'm responding to the last note.) I feel you on what you been going through, tryin to get that song/ that "haunting melody", in ya head, identified cause I been going through a similar thing with same artist WEBSTER LEWIS too...lol... By the way that's called an "ear-worm": "plays" over and over in your head and drives you crazy...lol...The song you want is called "The Love You Give....that track is "like dat" (I got it off LIME WIRE)...smooth and everything....The one that kept playin in my head was and still is called "Heavenly"....OMG yo, ...lol...that is the All-Time-Baby-Maker...lol....This is a strange side story: One day I was "beating my head up" in a record store, downtown Chicago, jus talkin about how bad I needed to get that album and a brutha walked up to me and said he had 2 copies he'd give me for a lift home cause he was a DJ running late for a party he was working.....I got the copies now! Now I need a record player....(WTF)...lol

Jan 14, 07 | 6:50 pmI went Howard University in the 80's. My roommate had a tape with lots of jazz artist such as Boney James. There was a song on the tape that was AWESOME. I heard it a couple of times and never knew the name of the song. All I can remember was a few lyrics. Captain of disguise, my heart was making faces. Now the love we found, is something I can't handle; just to name a few of the lyrics. Someone secretly borrowed the tape from me and I never heard it again. The hook stayed in my head for over 22 YEARS. One night while driving home, I was listening to WHUR 96.3 and THE SONG CAME ON!!!!!!!! I've hve been waiting for a very VRY VERY long time to hear this song.
Throughout the years I will ask family memebers if they ever heard a song (then I would attempt to sing the hook, stop and go and loook, I know that the love it grows the love you give to me) and my family had no CLUE what I was trying to SING.
So needless to say, I called WHUR and my call was answered on the first ring. I was going CRAZY!!! I have not heard the song in over 22 years. The DJ asked me to calm down and told me the artist name was Webster Lewis and the album name name 8 for the Eighties.
So.... Does anyone know where I can purchase this album, CD?????
Help!!!!
thanks

Sep 15, 06 | 10:58 amWow!
I'm completely at awe to learn that another one of our greats (Webster Lewis) has passed on. Recently I finally tracked down one of D.J. Rogers hits and was diligently seeking one of Webster's greats "Heavenly" when I came upon this website. My deepest sypathies to the family, and I thank God for the beautiful music that Webster left with us that will remain indefinitely.

Jul 29, 06 | 11:02 amI am sorry I am so late to find this site. I also just thought of Webster and looked him up on line and found that he passed.
I met him in Boston in the 70's and we hung out and partied a little and he was one of the best musicians I have heard live. He used to play regularly at a club in Cambridge, Ma and I was a fixture there.
Miss you man!

Feb 13, 06 | 9:31 pmI've been a fan of Webster Lewis since purchasing '8 for the Eighties' way back in early 1980. After that I was simply hooked on the brotha's phenomenal music and talent. The beautiful 'Love You Give To Me' has to be one of the alltime (unheralded) jazz soul classics (check out Webster's awesome solo on fender rhodes), and still sounds as fresh today as when it was recorded. As for the melodic, samba-influenced 'Barbera Ann' (from 'Touch My Love'), probably my all-time favourite record; truly sublime!
I only found out the sad news of my music hero's passing by chance when surfing the net for info on him (barely a week after he died).
Webster was truly one of those rare creative talents whose music touched so many of us priveleged to hear his work, and I sincerely hope he is now in a better place. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.
Thank you Webster for the wonderful music and memories, and may you continue to entertain and inspire future generations.

Dec 22, 05 | 7:25 amVT, just saw your post. All I can say is, anytime I look for the obscure stuff like this, I eventually find it relaesed in Japan.
Of course, Japan import CDs are very pricey. I did think I saw "8 For The 80's" on CD on some Japan website at some astronomical price. If I come across it again, I will let you know where and if it is indeed available. Best to find a copy on vinyl and transter it to disk. Heck, THAT will cost you enough just to fnd a pristine copy on vinyl! Good luck.

Oct 15, 05 | 4:33 pmLike the above folks, I was also a big Webster Lewis fan I have all of his solo albums on vinyl. Unfortunately, Sony has not seen fit to release any of his outings on CD and that is really a shame. This man, who had the classical background yet had strong R&B chops, was quite talented. His keyboard playing was superb-no one else sounded quite like him. I was very saddened to hear of his passing in '02. In recent years, I had read of his collaborations with Herbie Hancock and his conducting Barry White's Love Unlimited Orch. Some ignorantly locked Webster into the Disco framework, and while he did peak during that period, I simply saw him as a really gifted musician who was far more versatile than he was given credit for. I have hunted fpor years for a CD version of "On The Town" which features one of his most haunting and melodic gems, a song called "Seasons". Alas, my vinyl collection is packed away and all I have of that song is an old cassette, which I have since worn out. RIP, my Brother...

Jul 31, 05 | 2:46 pmJust in case any of the family and close friends of Jazz great Webster Lewis some how come across these words, I want you to know that I send my deepest sympathy and condolences to you. Like the other writer, I had no idea until recently that this awesome talent had passed. The news instantly brought me to a continued silent flow of tears. I thought "wow, this was a young brutha with a loving family and pursuing his dream to create and play music and he's gone. I never had the pleasure of meeting him or ever seeing him in concert, but I was and I'm still in awe about his music.
Just to let you know, I just recently got my place "wired" and one of the most challenging things I was doing (just like today) was looking through the seach engines for a "HOT" and yet mellow cut named "Heavenly" (8 for the 80's) sang by DJ Rogers (Say you Love Me-1977). I love that song and wanted to find it and see what he's done lately.....somebody, get at me if you can......1.........I wish someone would get him a tight web page up so we can learn more about him and his music...

Nov 21, 04 | 9:47 amI was listening to "Do it with Style" just two days ago. and to find out that he has passed is so sad. He must have been a fine man. I would have liked to have known him.

I'm glad to know that there are some devoted Webster Lewis fans. I can remember the first time I ever heard this brother, he blew my mind. His music is so relaxing to the mind. One day I was playing The Love you Give To Me and my mother fell in love with him. Now every time you get in her car you have to hear Mr. Lewis and I really don't mind! 8 For The 80's is one of if not the best ever!!!
