COMMENTS ON Frank Houlihan
Frank Houlihan was a fabulous DJ....I got to know him fairly well the last two years of his short life....Frank Houlihan use to play like no other! The first time I heard Frank Houlihan play was at the Ice Palace on a Saturday night back in 1980 and what a treat that was....I walked in a Bobby Thurstan's You've Got What It Takes was playing and he was mixing it into Lax's All My Love and extended the beginning with two records....(Something that today can easily be done w/a loop....)however, back then it was raw mechanical talent....
Frankie left the Ice Palace to spin at the new club that IP's owners were about to open...The Red Parrot (Big Mistake)
After that Frankie ended his career at Majiques Chippendales......He would do the strip show and then spin Thursday's through Saturday's and then take gigs at Tories and Ice Palace when he was on the DJ roster....
Frankie was if not the only, one of the DJs that played closing night at the Ice Palace.....It was a countdown of the best of the Disco era.........He was fabulous and when I walked in he immediately let me do a mix that night as I had done many times for him in the past and even filled in for him on nights he was not well enough to come into work at Chippendales...
Frankie was one of the best DJs ever and certainly could give you a night of music that you would never forget......
Frankie died in 1984 and the funeral took place at Leber Funeral in Union City, NJ on Kennedy Blvd.......Many of his close "circle of friends" were with him......
Frankie was 33 years young when he died....1951 - 1984.
Actually he died in May of 1986.
I was his light person for the last 4 years
of his brilliant career and he was truly
amazing. I have many tapes of him and
a few of his records from his collection.
He was way ahead of the curve of dance
music. His techinical talent can probably
be recreated in a studio but I dare anyone to try and recreate it on two turntables. He lived for the music and those of us who knew him were blessed to know him. Frankie was the Party!
Hey LightWoman...You are correct...I graduated College Feb 07 and Frankie had passed the year before....I sure miss that Red Head! He was so talented and he so loved what he did ! He was a Pearl that you long to find...............
He was a genius and you and I and many others were so lucky to have know him................................................
Do you remember me????

Frank Houlihan was always gracious to me. We met at Tracks in 84. He got me some gigs at Chippendales and the Parrot. I'll always remember his enthusiasm, talent and love of the music.
Hi lightwoman...think you are sarah, worked at magique before and after chippendales from 80 to 84, was gary and steven rogers assistant, remember great parties and every night, and frank was a great and nice guy, in those days everybody was enthusiastic, and talentuous and nice, and we had great fun, and lot of people from than left too early, kept a lot of material from those days, vip cards, flyers, lots of pictures, even of you, frank and randy cooper, and all staff, and as well tapes that frank made for one of my birthdays, now living in france between Paris and Nice, Frank and all the people from these days are in my albums and in my heart for ever
Hello everyone!
Frank gave my my fist gig at chippendales/Magique.
He would have me fill in sometimes throughout the nite form as he needed me to.
One nite after work, he took me with a large group to my first after hours club.
That did it for me.
We went to torys on 27th between park and lex. John Robinson was at the door and Mort worked the floor.
What a great little space. It had it all , jst scaled down.
It spun my head around, I was a fresh faced kid from long island and had no idea that world even existed.
One nite he asked the DJ, Tony I think was his name, If I could play a set. I played for and hour or so and that begun my carear in the biz as a dj.
I played anywere and everywere I could for a good two years.
Ater that , I opened a half dozen of my own after hours clubs in the follwing years and tried to keep the lessons I had been soooo fourtunate tho learn alive in passing them to other who were comming up..
I owed him everything.
When I found out that he had passed , it just blew me away. Even though we came from totaly differnt worlds we were very much alike. He is always there in my work and my music.
I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT HE GAVE ME MY FIRST BREACK AT THE ICE PALACE. WE AUDITIONED AND HE SAID I WANT HIM TO PLAY IT WAS ME DJ DANNY RODRIGUEZ I STARTED PLAYING ON FRIDAYS HE WOULD PLAY SATURDAYS, I WAS AMASING THE WAY HE WORKED THOOSE TURTABLES, FROM THERE I WENT ON TO CRISCO DISCO AND PLAYED FOR HANK AND THEN FOR TONY GIO AT THE COPACABANA, THANK YOU ALL
Who Was The DJ At The Ice Palace That Was Located In The 30's, West Side Bet 9th & 10th Avenues Atop The Sky Rink?
To die at age 33 was sad enough, to realize that he was just about to take off makes all the more remorseful. What he did was simply play the very best DISCO out there. Frank was a Jersey boy like me, a few years older, so he would open doors for me. I have no bad memories about this silly re-head. I know that he was buried in Union City/North Bergen, but where exactly? And how did he die? God bless.
Frank was buried in Leber Funeral Home on Kennedy Blvd in Union City.........He had a lot of friends and fans and people who loved him w/him on that sad, sad day..
Well I am finally getting back to posting and I will post a picture of Frankie that I just found while doing some spring cleaning! What a great DJ he was! I was very lucky to work with him and still remember his gravely voice....."last call"
Danny R...I remember you at Crisco!
Alex....I remember you too!
