I'm originally from Reidsville, NC now living in the state of Maryland. I had the pleasure of meeting my hometown hero, Curtis Hairston, in 1986 after his Atlantic album came out. (My favorite song was "Take Charge.") I had also purchased the 12" single "Dreamer" by the BBQ Band on which Curtis provided lead vocals. I was totally in love with Curtis' voice and once I met him in person, I was even more impressed with the man behind the voice. Curtis was gracious and very down-to-earth. I am pursuing a singing career also and I was encouraged to go after it more once I met Curtis because I realized that dreams really do come true and they come true even for people from Smalltown, NC. Rest in peace, Curtis; we miss you!

Curtis Hairston received love from WBLS and 98.7KISS in the 80s. He had a distinct tenor voice. I bought an import of BBQ Band in 1986 or 1987 and he was the lead. Dreamer (Finest Remix) sounded alot like the Finest by SOS. SOS was very popular in the UK at the time. Chillin' Out, I Want You All Tonight (it had Kashif sound) were good uptempo cuts and You're My Shining Star was a Quiet Storm favorite. He received much love in NY.

Didn't know Curtis Hairston passed away. So sorry to hear that - I LOVED his music. I have been looking for a song he recorded with the BBQ Band called "On the Shelf". It is impossible to find anything by Curtis Hairston. God Rest His Soul.

The only album Curtis made was just released (October 2005) in Japan for $160 !!!
Curtis was a marvellous singer. His lead vocals on the BBQ Band album 'Genie' from 1986 is like walking in a wonderful dream. His solo album is also fantastic - every song is good.
It is sad that so many disco artists are dead now. I'm very sorry for Curtis and his family/friends. Soooo young. Nobody should expect justice or logic on this planet. I love you Curtis.

Curtis Hairston is a part of my being. Shining Star is my favorite song of all time. I was sixteen years old when the song came out in January 1987 and it haunts me to this day. It brings back nothing but wonderful memories of my first love and New York City in winter time. I am originally from Queens, New York. Curtis got me through High School and the heart ache of losing your first love. I miss you Curtis very much.

I first heard Curtis Hairston about 1983? when "I want you all tonight "came out..98.7 Kiss FM ny was in full swing. I used to record tapes of dance mixes. When i heard "I want you all tonight" i loved it..Kiss fm and wbls heavily rotated the track. 3Yrs ago, i down loaded some weird dj mix. I was desperate then. I had to go back to my sources...Got to have the vinly "My favorite" just got to have it. I found 2 domestic copies on 12'' 45rpm. I played it. Boom, instant flashback to 1983.. I still love it. All Curtis Hairston joints are great but i"I Want You All Tonight" has to be my favorite" Its a journey back to when i was just 15yrs old diggin for records and recording those latenight radio mixes. The best times for me.....Got to play it again to remenisce of the good days of real music...

What can i say!!! What a singer!!! The song's take me back to 1983 ..Have fun... Just got his cd. It was hard to get but well worth the money. R.I.P you died too young. So more to give R.I.P Curtis Hairston.

I'm tying not to cry as I write and convey my deepest sorow over the news of curtist hairstons death . I only recently found out that he had past. My wife and I met when his album was playing on wbls and kiss fm of corse our favorite song was shining star. it would make my wife cry. I wish I could get the whole cd I do miss you R.I.P. we love you.

What can i say, i've known about Curtis's passing for awhile now, but i have just discovered this website so i'd like to leave a few words. Curtis Hairston was my favourite soul singer,i don't know what he had over the singers of that time, that i liked so much, maybe it was his softness of voice,or the phrasing of certain words, i just loved it, so bought all i could get of his.Apart from his early singles, it was Kae williams project BB&Q, I really started to notice how good he was.All the tracks on the "GENIE" lp were top class & i hammered that record till the grooves wore out.But it was his 1986 debut & sadly only solo outing that contained my favourite Curtis track. "The Morning After" stole my heart & is in my opinion the finest soul record of it's time,it just melts me.Now when i listen to it,it's all the more poignant, now that he's not with us.I miss that voice so much,you gave so much to people with that warm soul, i hope the Angels are listening to you now,Love you much, RIP.

Curtis Hairston music was the joint, I did not he passed away until I searched for him on the web. His performances at Club 88 in East Orange were off the hook. We need more artists like him. Where is The Colonel, "Colonel Abhrams".

I met mr. hairston in nyc at the copacabana . He and earl monroe walked in together .To make a long story short my friends had dragged me out to lift up the spirits. Needless to say we danced into the morning . It took me 11 years to find out he was gone.He had a voice that would uplift you . All I know is the must be having one heck of a music and voice jam up in heaven

Justing sitting thinking about my college days and I google curtis hairston to find that he's gone. We went to WSSU together and I was there when he took the crown "Mr. Ram". He was a fan of Peabo Bryson and I must say his voice and range rivaled Mr. Bryson's. Curtis had a very warm spirit and he knew how to get the crowd moving. But as he belted "Wildflower" at homecoming, we knew he had arrived.

i have so much to say i don't know where to start, so i'll have to say it with several postings as time goes on. i played at the "clubhouse" underground nightclub in washington dc, (sister club to nyc's "garage" & philly's "catacombs" ) along with tyrone"tito" robinson thru the 80's & curtis guest spotted there on at least 2 ocassions. i was a big fan of his BBQ work (dreamer is one of my all time favorite songs), as well as his atlantic debut lp. having said that any good underground night club fan has a special place in their heart for "i want you" his first big underground hit. that use to name the walls quiver & shake with it's thopping bassline & curtis's powerful vocals. worth mentioning also is the follow up single, "i want your lovin (i need a little bit). didn't do the damage that i want you did but still packed the dance floors in underground nightclubs across this country back in the day.

ps. thank you thank you for creating such an wonderful & informmative site. i have been a nightclub dj since 1978 & there were actually things here i wasn't aware of. bless you..
