As a young Maori Polynesian girl from Aotearoa/New Zealand we used to listen to the beautiful soulful blends of Black Uhuru, Gwen Guthrie, Ruby Turner. My life just would not have been the same without these people. By nature Maori alike are a very rthymic and rich cultured people. Gwen Guthrie will always be in my heart. I hope my daughter will continue to listen to richness in the songs portrayed. My favorite song is ...it's you that my heart beats for.... Gwen arohanui always Lisa
"Padlock" was always one of my favorites
She was a native of Newark, NJ, my hometown. Her collaborations with Larry Levan and Sly & Robbie are some of the best club music and remixes even by today standards. My favorites are Seventh Heaven remix is very rare to find and Peanut Butter, Hopskotch, Padlock to name a few.
She helped with Ben E King's comeback in music scene with her penned Supernatural Thing.
She was a great background singer who work side by side with Luther Vandross before he became famous. They did session work for the first Change album.
She was a singer, songwriter and a great talent. We do not have as many people like her around anymore.
Her music will live on. I heard it sampled on some hip hop and dance music records.

Hearing "Padlock" for the first time at the Paradise Garage!...need I say more?
Hi look i am also a great gwen guthrie fan but i have been looking for both her portrait album aswell as her self tittled album on CD but cant find either any where to me those were her two best albums, i have her ultimate collection but alot of songs from both those albums are not on it, will they ever release them to CD. thank you.

As an indian growing up in Porirua/New Zealand I remember the 70's & 80's were for me, a great time, for music -disco mainly.Everyone in our area came from various cultural backgrounds and we had one thing in common-we were all rhythmic,knew how to boogie and emersed ourselves in the music. The songs represented memories/experiences for me. Often when , I hear a song, I know exactly what I was doing when the song first came out.Very few songs completely caught my attention but- we all knew a great song when we heard it- Gwen's 'Nothin going on but the rent' - Dancing in the clubs and the street full of alcohol and happiness--Thank you Gwen-you impacted our lives when were were growing up.
The first time I ever say Gwen live was at Club Sensations...Summer time parties with Padlock....Should have been you being blasted by Larry at the Garage!

Great sounds- days of good nites out. Just recently created database of great music of the good ole days- have entered details of a wonderful song - a permanant record!
Most times the bad out numbered the good sounds- but this song stood out and made up for it.
Angela Bofill fans will know Gwen Guthrie for writing, "This Time I'll Be Sweeter".
Gwen Guthrie not only sang, she either co-written or wrote some of the best, dance songs!
So many songs that were hit records weren't enough from words to describe how powerful that she was!

This one truly hurt me ! Before I began hanging out at the Paradise Garage, while I was still in high school in NC (circa '79), it was "it shoulda' been u". Way later around '83 - '84, I heard Larry Levan play Padlock in the Paradise Garage. It was a pivotal music moment. I bought that LP & still have it. I fell in love with the Garage. Now I'm just saddened that not only can you not find artists like Gwen Guthrie, but the club vibe of that day no longer exists. This is loss upon loss. God rest your soul, Ms. Guthrie ! You surely made my days better !
6/4/07 - i am listening to padlock on launchcast and wanted to know whatever happened to the songstress. what a great song from my club and hangout days. lol much respect to the lady that made us dance. r.i.p and 4ever in our hearts
AIN'T NOTHING BUT THE RENT became an anthem for Black Women in 1985. It was their favorite catch phrase. Men everywhere got so tired of hearing it, it made us sick! But the song itself was very special. All of a sudden Gwen Guthrie was an over-night success. It took her over a decade to become that over-night success. PADLOCK was an R&B staple if not a DISCO classic.IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN YOU was another of her really strong songs. What I loved most from her was her days side-by-side with Luther Vandross in the 1980 album by CHANGE!! That harmony and chorus in HOLIDAY was exceptional. She is missed, GOD BLESS!
One of Larry Levan's muses Gwen was a great vocalist and entertainer..
and she was not ashamed to call it out and say ..You gotta have a J-O-B if ya wanna be with me~!!
