Stony Browder Jr.

I thought that stony browder was a very cool man,allthoue iev never actually known him from wat ive read hes very populare.alot of people love his music.my grandfather inspired me to listen to different typs of music.if i never met my grandfather i would not know who stony browder is.allthough i am only 10 years old i like to listen to people of the past,(im a big fan of elvis by the way),and alot of people were sadend of stony browders death,we will allwase love and charish stony browder.

Who can inform me about the haitian roots of Stony Browder ?

While visiting my grandfather's grave in Woodlawn Cemetary in the Bronx, I was so shocked to come across the grave of Stony Browder. I went to school with him -- JHS 123 and James Monroe High School. He and I played bass together in the school band and orchestra. Unfortunately, the only pictures that I have of him are from the "Monrovian" which is the James Monroe H.S. yearbook. He was a unique guy -- straightened his hair and wore ascots -- but very ahhhhtistic. Extremely memorable -- you had to recognize and remember him. He will be missed.

I knew Tom and Stony Browder as they were called .back in'67. They lived in the Rosedale Co-oP next to the James Monroe Projects where po' people like us lived. Stoney was a friendly but aloof guy who had a very effeminate way of holding his hand. I went to Monroe High with him too. His brother was called Tom
the Darnell part I never knew him by that name. Tom had fine lookin' girlfriend though!

I MISS STONY VERY MUCH,I HAD MANY MANY FUN TIMES WITH HIM. I'M MOST LUCKY BECAUSE MY VERY VERY BEST FRIEND IS CORY DAYE. WHEN I LOOK BACK THE CLUBS AND PARTY'S THEY TOOK ME TOO. I COULD WRITE A BOOK ON ALL THE FUN TIMES.YES I REMEMBER THEM PLAYING AT THE RITZ.THEY ALWAYS SOUNDED JUST LIKE THEIR RECORDS.

Wow! I was hoping that this page was a salute and a celebration of STONEY'S music and life. As a founding member of one of DISCO'S best ever groups, DR BUZZARD'S ORIGINAL SAVANNAH BRASS BAND he should be remembered fondly. Instead I find a disturbing attack towards ones family. I am leaving now, not wanting to be a part of family feuds.

My name is Ted Perlman. I am a Los Angeles-based producer/guitarist. In the 80's I was in a band with your Dad, "Dr. Buzzard's Savannah Band". We played the Ritz, and a few other gigs before the record label got into some sort of argument with your dad and that was it for the band. I didn't realize that he was writing and singing about getting high until years later. Even though the songs had names like "Bass Bottle Boogie", etc. I was pretty naive at the time :-)

But musically he was brilliant! I could have played with the band forever - it was my kind of music. A blend of 40's jazz, 50's boogie, 60's rock, 70's r&b...I was in heaven onstage with them. Corey Daye sang beautifully with us. Your father was married to Signey at the time. Please contact me if you ever want to work on any music, etc. Or just to talk about your dad.

I am deeply saddened hearing of Stony Browder's passing. I played with DBOSB in the early 80's and remember pinching myself cause the band sounded so good sometimes I thought I must be dreaming. Stony was always upbeat, generous and wildly inventive, it was a pleasure watching him drive the band from the Piano. I also marveled at the level of musicianship in that band,aside from the core band of which Cory's voice was a straight gift from God and I loved Mickey Sevilla's no nonsense drums.The horn sections were absolutely amazing to a man, tho I cant remember any names. Two guitarists stand out in my mind, Rodney Jones was one and I cant recall the other brothers name but I know that he went on to play in Elvin Jone's Band and these two cats were burning. I also got to play with Mark Josefsberg on vibes (Big Shout out). I play latin percussion, congas,bongos,shakers etc.

I knew Stony back in the 60's, in high school and beyond. I played trombone with his band "Uno Mundo" in gigs where they used a four piece brass section. I sat in some recording sessions in 1969, and I remember having a great time with Stony's tune "It's My Lucky Day".
I remember his dad driving the band around in a very loaded station wagon, and I NEVER saw Mr. Browder Sr. without a cigar hanging between his lips.
Playing music with Stony was pure joy. He was always serious and down to business with his music, but it was also fun to play and be inspired by him.
I left New York (and America) in early 1970 and I never saw Stony again. I cherish the memory of our friendship, and the exquisite times we had making music for happy feet.

Dear Stony Ray -
My sympathies to you and your sister. I was shocked and extremely saddend to just learn of your Dad's death. I knew Stony from 3rd grade at PS 66 in the Bronx through James Monroe High School, where we were in Drama Class together (along with your uncle). Even in elementary school, Stony was always entertaining us by singing Jerry Lee Lewis songs, accompanying himself on his guitar. I loved it - along with everyone else in class! He was our very own SuperStar - who needed Elvis?! Stony and I "went steady" in fourth and fifth grade. He would give me plastic rings from the gum ball machines. I would have loved to have met him again before he died. Our lives took us in totally different directions after high school. Please write to me - is it possible to get any photos of your Dad? I only have the one in our high school yearbook. Thank you. God Bless.

Doctor Buzzards Original Savannah Band is the first album I ever purchased - It was the start of my music collection -Cher Chez La Femme began my love for disco music - and music in general - the reunion i always dreamed about will now never happen. Rest in peace.

stony browder is the dad of practically my brother...he died a couple of years ago i think from alcohol poisoning? i dont know i dont bring it up with stony(the 3rd) in fact i only looked at this cuz i knew his father was a great talent and im looking for pictures of stony the 3rd because i dont feel like asking my brother for something and i found this kid who looks just like him...hey stony you reading this? anyway i heard a few songs by stonys dad and it was great..stony got any pictures?

I must apologize for my prior post. It would seem as though I have displayed the likes of a whining childish classless individual. My intentions are not to place blame on my uncle for anything as my father would have thought it better to forgive him. I would be more than happy to help you with information...My father was born in the Bronx, NY in 1949 of Ollie Browder and Matilda Browder. He was as so many say a true talent and unfortuneatly his own brother, (Most of the things on the internet you read are lies, August Darnel, Was not his half brother but his full brother) had stolen music from my father in order to get his career off the ground. Even today August has promised to take care of me and my sister after his brothers passing but still does nothing. He has taken my fathers new music master tapes and covered Che Che le femme over seas and I am unable to see any money from it. August didn't even come to the funeral. Forgive me please if I am too nasty in my speach but it simply expresses the anger I feel towards this man. If there's anything else please let me know

I greatly appreciate all of your comments and support posted abou my father Stony Ollie Browder, however my sister and I are no longer entitled to the rights of his share of the royalties because of a court battle in the mid nintees that he lost between he and a Sandy Lindser, Mr. Lindser doesn't need the money and yet I am constantly struggling to make films and get on my feet. If any body wants information on my father please comment and I will be more than happy to tell the story of his life before the tragedy that bereaved me.

It's Thanksgiving 2004, and this is the first that I've heard of Stony Browder Jr.'s passing. I'm in shock. Dr Buzzard was one of the greatest, most innovative groups ever, and I had always been waiting for a reunion, maybe on VH1's "Bands Reunited" show, but that's beyond the realm of possibility now. Glad I still have my Dr Buzzard albums, especially the ones not available on CD.

I hadn't heard the news that Stony had died until now. He certanly did have a heart of gold, and I'll never forget him. I played with
Stony, Corey, Mickey, Signey and others for a few years around 1984. I will fondly remember the times we spent together. What a loss.

5-29-04 i met stony browder nov of 76 in anahiem ca. at the time of a brand new disco club, the crescendo. five monthes later i met stony again with cory,august,andy and mickey at a r and b club in the LA crenshaw area called the total experience . stony and all the members made a big impression on my life.
