Jeff Ader - mastering engineer at Frankford Wayne in New York City Jeff Ader: In 1977 after attending a mastering session at Frankford/Wayne Mastering Labs in NYC I approached Tom Steele (the owner) for a job. He agreed and I trained under him, Dom Romeo and Jose Rodriguez. (When Jose left for Sterling I took over his room).

While at F/W I mastered records for the following artists and labels:

  • Sam Records - Gary's Gang - "Keep On Dancin'"

  • Polydor Records - Frank Mills - "MusicBox Dancer"

  • Prelude - Musique - "In the Bush, Keep on Jumpin'", France Joli - "Come to Me", Theo Vaness - "Back to Music"

  • Salsoul, Gold Mind, Tom n' Jerry Records - Instant Funk, Loleatta Holloway, Claudja Barry, Double Exposure, Salsoul Orchestra-"West Side Story Medley", "Christmas Album"

  • M2WB Records, The Mission Mountain Wood Band - "In Without Knockin'".

Mastering records destined for a 12" release was a challenge because we had to have a punchy bottom and crisp top while keeping the volume up and not getting kissing grooves (which would cause skips). Tom Steele developed an EQ process that was unique. This was why everybody wanted to get their dance music mastered at Frankford-Wayne.

After leaving Frankford/Wayne I did a short stint at Masterdisc to cut Gary's Gang- "Keep on Dancin'" for Columbia. I then became a free-lance cutting engineer working out of "The Cutting Room" at the Record Plant where I mastered Mark Gray's "Boogie Hotel" for TDK Records in 1982.

Jeff I live in Brooklyn 27 and working very hard to bring disco back. While stereophiles and house producers do love their disco few if any have tried to bring it back without sampling. What we are doing is very difficult but we are getting very close. If you would be willing to give us a listen it would be much appreciated.

Jeff, thanks for adding your profile. Would love to hear more about any special challenges you may have encountered mastering records to be pressed for the then "new" 12 inch format.
