Biddu

Indian Disco music producer (b. 19--(??) - present)

discoBorn BIDDU APAIAH, he was instrumental in the early days and the development of DISCO. BIDDU established the British Disco Scene of the mid-1970s.

While Biddu had a lot of experience, it was in 1972 that he got on a roll. It started when he met CARL DOUGLAS. BIDDU produced his album and was going to release its first single. BIDDU had a last minute change of mind, and put the "B" side on side "A" and flipped them around. The release of KUNG FU FIGHTING was the first really brilliant desicion, of many, that he made. KUNG FU FIGHTING became an International Hit, eventually selling very close to 10 million copies.

Under the name BIDDU ORCHESTRA; on his own Label, he started his own solo DISCO career. In 1975 he hit pay dirt when he scored with the "Summer Of 42'". It was a huge "Hustle" record, that was received extremely well on both sides of the Atlantic. It was also in 1975, that he started working with the song bird TINA CHARLES. They spent many months in the studio working hard. When they were finished, they created magic. It was one of the finest DISCO albums of all time. Every cut was played in New York City and London alike. The two HUGE hits, the two DISCO CLASSICS that were on this album, were I LOVE TO LOVE(But My Baby Loves To Dance), and DANCE LITTLE LADY DANCE. I would add YOU SET MY HEART ON FIRE. That is three DISCO CLASSICS off this album. It established BIDDU as a force in DISCO, and made a STAR of TINA CHARLES.

As the years passed the BIDDU ORCHESTRA continued to release "Covers" and "Instrumental" versions of DISCO hits, with a surprising number of them getting Club Play. Then in 1977 BIDDU struck again. He produced Jamaican JIMMY JAMES, and another TWO DISCO CLASSICS!! "I'LL GO WHERE YOUR MUSIC TAKES ME" and DISCO FEVER were huge Club records, with I'LL GO WHERE YOUR MUSIC TAKES ME exploding all over the radio as well. BIDDU made a statement with all these DISCO CLASSICS, the man knew what he was doing, a great producer that could spot talent, and knew what the people wanted.

His BIDDU ORCHESTRA continued through the years, with two things in common on all their releases. They were all great Orchestration and pure DISCO! By 1980, BIDDU saw the writing on the wall, and returned to his home, India, and started the DISCO movement there as well. To a great pioneer we give our thanks.

Thank you for the bio on Biddu; I had the good fortune to meet him in 1979, or 1978. Only one comment to add, his last name is spelled Appaiah.
