A.J. Cervantes, founder of Butterfly and Destiny Records speaks with DiscoMusic.com
Disco group popular from 1977 to 1980
Simon Soussan had prior experience with DISCO acts, having produced and developed SHALIMAR and PATTI BROOKS.
In the summer of 1977 he got vocalists Jason Reed, Jerry Scott, Fred Sawyers and Jessica Williams together and created ARPEGGIO. In early 1978 they released the album titled, "LET THE MUSIC PLAY". DISCO was in its Prime, and this album took off. It was a huge success, with a few incredibly strong tracks. Besides the Title track, LET THE MUSIC PLAY; SPELL BOUND, I WANNA TANGO, and my personal favorite RUNAWAY were all being played by the sophisticated dee jay in every great DISCO across the United States. Those album cuts supported ARPEGGIO'S release of their only single, a 12" version of LOVE AND DESIRE!
It was an instant DISCO CLASSIC that took over the Dance Floor. All of ARPEGGIO'S music featured frenetic percussion tracks, that were electronically enhanced that drove the Dancers to the DANCE FLOOR and refused to allow them to sit down.
A favorite ploy that JIMMY BURGESS(among many) used was to play a medley mix of all the playable songs. I had two copies of this album, and that allowed for a twenty-five to forty-five minute set that guaranteed the DANCE FLOORS maintained the energy and quantity I desired.
ARPEGGIO toured the DISCO Club scene and made an impression that remains strong in my mind, to this day. While they released two other albums afterwards, this was really their only successful one. By 1980 DISCO was out, and ARPEGGIO followed. But LOVE & DESIRE, RUNAWAY and LET THE MUSIC PLAY all became DISCO CLASSICS! The shame of it was, that there was real talent there, they had a good formula that made us love them.
On a personal note, the COVER of DION'S RUNAWAY remains one of the "Hidden" DISCO gems of all time. Along with The RITCHIE FAMILY'S "QUIET VILLAGE", they are possibly the two BEST DISCO CLASSICS that were never released as a single. I loved this music, DISCO AT ITS BEST!!!
