Tom Moulton

Inventor of the 12 inch single and creator of the Disco mix

Tom MoultonTom Moulton [b: November 29, 1940 - present] is the best known Disco remixer as his name has appeared on hundreds of Disco records from the 1970s. Moulton is the originator of the concept of the extended Disco mix along with the creation of the Disco "break" first used on Don Downing's "Dream World" and also created the first 12" single while pressing an acetate for a record called "So Much For Love" by Moment Of Truth [12D-2009 DJ] with assistance from his mastering engineer, the late Jose Rodriguez. This would ultimately lead to the release of the first official promotional 12" single: "Free Man" by Southshore Commission and the first commercially available 12 inch record on Salsoul Records of "Ten Percent" by Double Exposure.

One would think that with his talent for being in tune with the needs of early Disco DJs that Tom Moutlon may have been a DJ himself. In reality Tom never DJ'ed, but did get his start in Disco by creating several reel-to-reel tapes of painstakingly segued and edited tracks for dance clubs on Fire Island. From here he went on to be the most sought after Disco remixer and even went on to produce for such artists as Grace Jones and his own TJM for Casablanca Records.

Some of Tom Moulton's best known and loved remixes are:
Love Is The Message - M.F.S.B.
Doctor Love - First Choice
Love Sensation - Loleatta Holloway
Free Man - South Shore Commission

Oh man, what a legend!

Having a chance to meet Tom Moulton was a chance of a lifetime!

His accomplishments are priceless and words alone couldn't descibe how great his remixes are.

If Love Is The Message, Doctor Love and other remixes aren't enough to mention for his discography, then you just don't know!

Hi Tom, Still have all those 12" disco classics you gave me. Do you still have the Quad eight tracks? Remember my store Fast Trax? Take care, Barry

He is a true inspiration. When 12 inch records were hot ,seeing 'a Tom Moulton Mix' at the lower half of the label meant you were in for a treat. He's one of the reasons I became a DJ.

I've been spinning 12" dance records for 14 years and just recently found out about Tom Moulton. I was curious if we are related in anyway. If anyone knows how I can get in contact with Tom Moulton it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I know Richie Matthias from Chequers very well.
He playi in a Disco/Funk & Reggae group at the moment.
Unfortunatly he had a stroka a couple of weeks ago and is still pretty ill.
It came as a real shock to us.

.. not only did Tom Moulton invent the 12" single & help catapult dance music to a worldwide audience, he also created some of the best dance records of all time .. His mix of "Love is the message" must be the finest record of the 20th Century .. and after 30 years in the music buisness the great man continues mixing .. just check out his recent 11 minute mix of Eddie Kendricks "Keep on truckin" on the Tom Moulton double CD on Soul Jazz records .. or the superb 9 minute remix of "Get down tonight" on the KC & the Sunshine Band 25th anniversary CD .. God bless you Tom .. may you continue producing fantastic remixes for another 30 years xx
