DJ Steve The Saga Perez
New York Disco DJ (Born Dec. 6, 1960 - Present)
Born and raised in El Barrio, Spanish Harlem 112th street. It all started for Steve when he was 15 years old sneeking into clubs and playing it off as if he was 21 years of age just to get in, getting his first deejaying experience at a club called the Starship Discovery on 42nd street.
Steve knew then that he wanted to dee-jay. He hung out with dj's like Ray (Pinky) Valasquez at the Ipanima Disco, went to DJ Conventions and hung out with people like the late Eddie Rivera from IDRC record pool, David Todd from RCA records, Howard Meritt from Casablanca records, Doug Riddick from Private Stock records, Izzie Sanchez from Atlantic Records and Tommy Baratta from West End records just to name a few and that's how he met the legend himself LARRY LEVAN in Mel Cherens office at West End records.
Steve was picking up records one day at West End and Mel asked him what kind of music do you like playing, Steve said all kinds especially disco then Larry walks in and remembers seeing Steve at other record companies. Tommy introduced them and gives them each invites to a West End party at Les Mouche they were to be picked up after the convention in front of the Americana hotel by limo to the club. Steve met up with Larry who was hanging out with Richard Long. Larry introduced them and at first Steve thought he too was a dee-jay, but later found out that he was an electronics engineer. They were suppose to take their own limo to the club but wound up sharing one instead. Larry asked where are you picking up from next week Steve said he wasn't sure maybe Warner Bros. So Larry asks if he would like to tag along with him because he had to go there also. Needless to say Steve did. Steve didn't have the connection that Larry did with the record company's and Larry knew that, but after a couple of days with Larry alot of doors opened for Steve.
Larry one day gives him 30 invites to a club called the Paradise Garage where Larry worked. Steve became a member for the first two years 76 to 78 then worked for Michael Brody at the Legendary PARADISE GARAGE from 1978 till it closed in 1987 he then moved to Highland, New York when the club closed and now works for the State University AT New Paltz. Also resident DJ at the Maverick. WHERE THE SAGA CONTINUES you can e-mail him at perezs@newpaltz.edu like Steve would say "ASIDE FROM GOD, MUSIC IS THE ANSWER AND LOVE IS THE MESSAGE"....PEACE
