Peter Reyes
New York City Area Disco DJ
Peter Reyes was born and raised in the “Little Havana” area of Union City, New Jersey to Cuban parents. From an early age, Peter listened to black radio shows where he was exposed to the roots of Soul, Funk, Latin, and Jazz. Artists like Earth, Wind & Fire, Ashford & Simpson, Barry White, Tower Of Power, and War were profound influences to him.
In 1974, he was introduced to Tony Gonzales, who at the time was running some local venues such as the “The Mongoose”, “The Penthouse”, and “The Odyssey”. Tony became a mentor to Peter, introducing him to programming techniques, clubs and DJs of the time. At his various clubs, Tony brought in DJs from NYC that included the likes of Frances Grasso (The Sanctuary), Frank Houlihan (Ice Palace 57) and Robbie Lesile (The Saint). When Peter was given the opportunity to open up for some of the guest DJs, there was no turning back! Later on, influences like David Mancuso (Loft), David Todd (Le Jardin), Bobby DJ Guttadaro (Infinity), Larry Levan (Paradise Garage), Roy Thode (Ice Palace) and Jim Burgess (Studio 54) inspired him to create the foundation for the music he would program in the coming years.
.
In 1976 while stationed in Germany, Peter had the opportunity to DJ there and all across Europe, at spots such as The 25 Club, Cobra Lair, Big Ben and The Eastside. On his return to the states in the early 80’s, Peter landed a residency at the “The Monastery” in Seattle, Washington, where the legendary DJ Walter Gibbons of Salsoul fame was about to leave for New York. There Peter began developing and honing his techniques and cultivating his emotive style. He played 15-hour sets to a weekly crowd of 3,000 plus frenzied dancers. Soon he established the club as a haven for the likes of Madonna, the Pointer Sisters, Culture Club and many other great performers. As a result of this residency, Peter was offered guest spots throughout the US, Canada, Europe, and Asia.
After “The Monastery”, Peter returned to New Jersey and from 1985 - 1989 focused on his personal business career. He eventually returned to the wheels of steel in 1990 and began playing again at guest spots through out the world and at numerous well known NY/NJ area clubs such as Discovery II, Copcabańa, Fantasia, Club Zanzibar, The Loft, Sound Factory Bar, Sapphire Lounge, and Tribecca. Currently you can find him playing for the who’s who in the fashion, film, and music industry at clubs & lounges worldwide and at NYC spots like The Roxy, SOB’s, Avalon, Eugene, Lotus, Centro Fly, China Club, and Discotheque. The list goes on & on.
His monthly venue “Havana-Soul” in New York City continues to be a great success. He continues to amaze his crowd with a program of eclectic rare grooves, Latin and house beats.
You can also see the likes of many world-renowned DJ’s playing along side him on any given night.
Peter’s unique skills as a DJ are his capacity to not only incorporate diverse genres and styles, but to transcend them by infusing his music with pure emotion. His talent is matched only by his passion, which has led him to become one of the most respected veteran DJ’s among his peers in the industry. After 32 plus years he has amassed a collection of over 45,000 records, which is still going strong!
Peter is also a member of the Disco Dance Music DJ Hall of Fame.
ADVANCE \d4In 1997, his close friend, DJ Hippie Torrales encouraged him to start “Records Ltd”, a vinyl record Internet search service. The company provides DJ’s, producers and collectors of 12 inch singles, LPs, and 45's. (Soul, Funk, Latin, Jazz, and Disco) the opportunity to locate the rare titles they are seeking.
