Calhoon

New York / Florida based Disco group from the 1970s. (Bio)

A short time back Billy Stewart of the 70s group Calhoon contacted DiscoMusic.com to let us know what he was up to and to say hello to all the fans of this site. Here's a brief bio on them...

Calhoon was formed in 1972 by six high school friends who decided to put together a band to play school dances and local events. In the next three years they gained a large fanbase and became New York's top paid non-recording band.

After much success and many performances, Calhoon decided to buy a 20,000 square foot restaurant in Hollywood, Florida and turned it into south Florida's largest New York style dance club / Disco called Rumbottoms.

Every week Calhoon would book top name acts to play at Rumbottoms and Calhoon would be the opening acts for the shows. It was around this time that they were approached backstage by legendary Beatle's record producer Phil Spector's A & R man, Ron Saul about a recording contract on Spector's new Warner Brother's label, Warner / Spector. This labels other acts included such big names as Cher, Harry Nilson and others.

Within four months Calhoon had released their first single, "(Do You Wanna) Dance, Dance, Dance" b/w "Rain 2000," which began to climb the charts as they completed their follow-up single "Soul Man" and completed an album in Philly with Don Renaldo supplying all the wonderful strings we hear on all those great Philly Soul records of the 1970s.

During the next few years Calhoon toured the U. S. and Canada opening concerts for Patti LaBelle, K. C. and the Sunshine Band, Gloria Gaynor, Four Tops, Tavares, Al Green, Temptations, Harold Melvina and the Blue Notes, Teddy Pendergrass, Vicki Sue Robinson, The Trammps, The Stylistics, B. B. King, Sister Sledge, Carol Douglas, The Monkees, and many others including a three-month stadium tour with Isaac Hayes.

Calhhon's music is availble on vinyl at many online record stores such as GEMM and their records were released in the U. S., Canada, U. K., Italy, France, Germany and Japan. In fact Calhoon's (Do You Wanna) Dance, Dance, Dance" is considered to be one of the earliest 12 inch singles offered by Warner Brothers being released as a promo to DJs in 1975.

Lead vocalist Billy Stewart is still active in the music business and his new music is available at CD Baby, Apple's iTunes Music Service and otehr stores.

Billy would love to hear from you. E-mail Billy Stewart at billjim32935@ail.com..

A big thank you to Billy for sending over photogrphs and records for use on DiscoMusic.com.

The End

YOUR COMMENTS ON Calhoon

I remember Calhoon, back when they played at Rumbottoms! I remember a lot of other bands playing there as well. Those were the best days to be at clubs to dance until dawn! I wish we had clubs like that now! I would still be dancing the night away! Thanks, for the memories!

Does anyone remember the 'She' in fort Lauderdale, or 'Keith's', or the' Pagoda', or 'Mix II', or the place that burned down on 21st & collins, back in the early 70's- it was the first unisex club, bathrooms and all ? Thanks, Beth

Yeah, I remember Calhoon and Rumbottoms, and so many other Bands and groups that played at this Club, although my memories of the Club's interior (and bands that played there) are crossed with those of the "Limelight" that occupied the same location/building later.

I also remember the Radio advertising spots, with the deep male voice chanting RUM-BOTTOMS..after you heard those ads, we couldn't wait until the weekend, those were the days.

I also caught Calhoon at club Brasseries in Miami Springs.

Thanks for the great music, I will forever love that rhythm guitar on "Dance Dance Dance" great stuff.

PS:Beth, you just reminded me of club "She", sadly I never went there, I was to young, but remember all the buzz about that club from older friends, I've got to ask them about this early South Florida club now. Heard about the others Clubs except Keith's, The burned down club might be Stone Wall, Shan-Hai ?
Maybe you could add them here in the Club section here with some of your memories. I'm always interested in South Florida club history. Thanks.

Dear Mixmachine,
Yes, the club I was talking about was called stonewalls, on 23rd & collins- the best disco ever played there. I remember Shang hi very well, do you remember the bouncer named Tony? That place was OK, but the clubs in Fort Lauderdale were better, with the exception of stonewalls, pagoda, mixII,and rumbottoms. The She was back in the early 70-74 time. They played killer disco, as well. Lot's of memories from that place! I am looking for someone who would remember the person who sang the song-"in the evening the real me comes alive, I can feel it,it's like something I can't describe, it's like magic" I don't know all the words , it was a female singer, plus shot in the dark, Thanks, Beth

Beth, I was just a tad to young to go to the Shan-Hai, but later one of my best friend was the late DJ Carlos Nodal, he worked the Shan-Hai club, this was his first Miami gig coming down from NJ, and He used to tell me stories about the club and the music he played there.

Some locals claim The 'Stone Wall' was the first Miami Disco club, I don't really know, I know about this club only because of my old friends as most locals never even heard of this early Miami club.

You can post any questions about music (or anything else) you'd like to remember in the forums area, ( I believe the moderators don't like us having this conversations in this section)there is a dedicated section for Music ID where many oldtimers hang out providing answers.

The song you're looking for is "In the evening" (1984)by Sheryl Lee Ralph, and you can find info and scans it in the Disco vaults in this forum.

See you at the forums!

Dear Mixmachine,
Thanks! You are awesome. How do you get to the forum for music? Yes, stonewalls was the 1st disco club ever! My girlfriends & I were too young, but we used to get in without problems, & yes the music was the best! The other place Keith's was a gay club off on west dixie hwy in Hallendale, that was the place where new dances were happening, plus more classic real disco- I mean real stuff! We used to hang there to learn the new dances, & music, then go to the She, or another place called something begining with a C- off of commercial somewhere, can't remember the name right now, your friend the late DJ, I remember there was good music there, too. Do you remember someone by the name of Apples? Or Manny Alvarez- tall-red hair? In Fort. Lauderdale- Mr. pips was a place where all the big great bands played- Tavares, Harold Melvin & the bluenotes, commodores, Trammps, Grace Jones, etc. That placed was great, too. It was so much fun going to clubs then, people were there to dance & have fun, not to hurt people, etc. I miss those days! I remember after clubbing all night everyone went to some diner off of 84- Lennys, I think. Thanks so much for the tune, there are others, but please let me know where to go for that, Thanks again, Beth

Beth, sadly, I don't remember those names,to many years have gone by, but I do remember club Mr Pips, I was there many many times driving up from Miami, "You'll never find.." by Lou Rawls is permanently associated with that club in my mind.

The club with the 'C' is probably The Copa, a very famous Gay spot from back then and behond, it was finally demolished recently, after the building was destroyed a couple of years earlier by a Hurricane.

Scroll up and to your right you'll see the list of forums here.

'Disco Records A-Z' are the vaults, you can search for your favorite artist there,(and add comments)lots of oldies.

'Discotheques and clubs" is where you can find and add missing clubs you remember and/or comments..

And under "disco forums" you'll find many different sub-forums, there at the top is the "ask/ID" songs forum, followed below by the general '70's and 80's Disco' section.
Lots of Info here, I will take you quite a while to go through it all, but I guarantee you, the revived memories will be priceless..

'till later...

I first saw CALHOON at New Jersey's CAMEO and booked him at BINGHAMPTON'S FERRY BOAT. I was surprised that they beat me down to Miami, when I found them at RUMBOTTOMS. A solid group. Thanks.
