YOUR COMMENTS ON Phyllis Hyman

I followed Phyllis' career from it's inception, her first hit being "Loving You, Losing You". I went to a party at Russian River one summer that featured the Patrick Crowley singers and they started the music over with "Loving You, Losing You". It was one of those great big production numbers that was wonderful to dance to. I remember hearing that she died of a gunshot wound on the news and was devastated. News has it that her career was in a slump and she was very depressed. The cause of death was later ruled suicide. I just couldn't believe it. I saw her last around 1992 at Oakland's Paramount Theatre where she headlined with Jean Carne and Ramsey Lewis. What a great talent she was. Her big disco hit was "You Know How to Love Me".

Phyllis also appeared on Broadway in Sophisticated Ladies, for which she was nominated for a Tony Award. She also was a guest star on one of Barry Manilow's TV specials.

I remember driving to Fire Island when WQTU stopped the music to read the news of Phyllis Hyman death, I was shocked since I've followed her career and thought that she was one of the best of the disco era, with her died a legend, it's too bad that her depression led her to suicide, she is in peace and hopefully singing to the angels.
Phyllis you are missed baby! : (

She will go down as one of the best voices in R/B history. She was up there with Billie and Nina..its sad she didnt receive the acclaim she deserved.perhaps as the years go by many will rediscover her legacy.

Miami's own, Phyllis was very active in Miami's night life. She performed at all the R&B clubs, then graduated to the DISCOS after the release of YOU KNOW HOW TO LOVE ME. She could be seen at HONEY FOR THE BEARS, 747 club, Big Daddy's, CROWN, Manhattan, just about everywhere that there was live music, Phyllis played there. Her angelic voice was taken from us too soon. We miss you, GOD BLESS>
