Default Cd or Vynal Vinyl

Pick your all time favorite 12 inch singles.
Would you rather have used but in good shape vynal copies or all 12 songs on a single CD remastered from the first generation studio master tapes BY FOLKS involved with the orginal recordings and with someone like Tom Moltin (sp?) handling the compilation.

I know the majority of people here loves vinyl.

But I live in a far away country (this means I can't find here rare disco albums).

And I have already lost big money buying through internet (this means I had my credit card account debited but the albums never arrived here in Brazil).

For this reasons I will choose new CD re-releases (remastered or not) or computer made restoration CDs taken from albums that will never be re-released on CD... like for instance the fantastic WARRIORS by RINDER & LEWIS or even GREG DIAMOND's records.

I really hope they would all be re-released, but it seems unlikely...)

Hi,

I will pick up CDs instead of vynil. Why? Well, I'm not a LP fetichist after all. Don't misundestand me, I love vynil, but CDs are very practical and the sound of the CDs today is good as any LP edition. To make a vynil sound great you MUST have a expensive sound system, with a expensive turntable, etc. You can hear CDs with good sound quality on your computer, on your car, at home, etc.

I know there's a lot of vynil fetichists among music fans, but I think the MUSIC is more important than the audio format. One of the greatest contributions of CDs are the re-release of albums and songs by artists that were very hard to find on vynil. I'm talking about MY experience here in BRASIL - in my teen years, the "LP" era, I never ever ever ever ever ever (that's enough) found records like PET SOUNDS or ZIGGY STARDUST, just to mention 2 of the most known pop albums of all-time. For the one who live in EUROPE or in the USA, maybe it seems absurd to say a thing like that, but I have to tell you, some of the greatest music I've ever heard I knew on CD, NOT on vynil - and I'm talking about 60's and 70's music. Our friend PAULO wrote about this on his post. Do you know how many original OTIS REDDING's albums I found on a vynil format over 20 years or more? Just 3 or 4 - yes, THREE or FOUR! With the CD edition of his catalogue, I've bought all his records.

Remember, it's all about the music, not about the SOUND FORMAT. If I find an album by THE EBONYS on CD, I'll pick it up, and if I find an album by THE EBONYS on vynil, I'll pick it up too.

Peace and CDs and LPs for everyone,

zeca azevedo

I am of the same opinion as Zeca - if I find it on vinyl, then I buy it, and if I find it on CD then I buy that. I am equally happy searching the second hand racks of CDs and vinyl.

The problem with vinyl is that the condition can be poor (like the Barry White LP I bought today), but it's a 1974 original and I shall clean it up as best as I can....

I did a substantial upgrade on my hi-fi system 18 months ago (for my 40th birthday), and it seems to blast out the disco beat on Cd or vinyl equally happily

Hello zeca azevedo:

Just in case you haven't noticed about that. When you write in this forum, no city and no country is shown in your profile, here at the left side of the message body.

If you don't mind mine advice is that you might update your profile, so everyone in this forum will know from where are you from.

Cheers, and keep Senhores do Groove going.

Well... given that I'm spending hours and hours pulling all the surface noise out of LPs and putting them on CDs, I think it's a safe bet that I prefer the sound of CDs for the lack of pops, clicks, rumble, etc.

I agree that vinyl can sonically surpass CD, but... it usually doesn't. The higher cost and maintenance of a decent analog system aside, the other factor is the low-quality vinyl that most disco records were pressed on.

Having said that... the one thing I do love about LPs are the gorgeous sleeves, the look of the vinyl, the labels, etc. I like CD reissues that capture as much of this as possible. Every now and then you get one that includes the original lyrics, photos, etc., but most don't even come close.

Well said, Graham. I totally agree. If only vinyl stayed in pristine condition! But give me the CD with NO pops, no clicks, no hiss, and NO odd residue from it's previous owners!!!!.

BTW, to show you what an influence you've been on me, earlier this week I scored the "Trocadero Bleu Citron" LP ($4.95) and TODAY I FOUND "ROMEO & JULIET" FOR $1.00!!!! Side 2 of R&J is a little flawed, but the whole thing plays through. What a coup, huh???

NOW, I just gotta learn to LOVE it!!!!!

Indeed! Trocadero is quite hard to find; the only copy I've ever seen is the one I ordered off the 'net. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE side 1 of this album. Costandinos at his best!

I guess I should get around to restoring it then...

Well, I prefer CD. I'm recording, gradually, all my LP's to CD-R. It's more practical to handling. Of course when I found a vynil record I take it. Later it goes to a CD-R. This way my vynils are protected and I use them for some info research.

Peace.

Hello Fello Topic posters,Vinyl is my preference for spinning. I have records from the 70's that I spun in clubs and still sound great today. The reason-I took care when spinning them and handeling them. Thankfully the clubs I spun at had their systems well laid out (turntables on seperate concrete colums to isolate them from acoustic feed back) so I didn't 'kill' them (the records) by having to over-kill the tracking force of the stylus. I have two cd built into a mixing console, but I prefer the 'hands-on' abillity that vinly/records give the dj's.

I hear you, Graham! I was just talking to a friend about how much I miss full size album covers. Some were true works of art! I used to love to see who did the photography, artwork and/or art direction. After awhile you could tell if people like Norman Seef, Scavullo, Kosh, Amsel, etc. were involved. The only thing good about CDs coming in the long cardboard boxes (anybody remember those days?) was for the artwork. However, I have to admit the boxes were pretty wasteful (but I've saved a few!).

As for Trocadero Bleu, I guess I should play that album. I bought it along time ago, but I don't think I ever played it.

Talking about cover art. I like the cover art to "THE MIRACLES" album "CITY OF ANGELS" (1975). Really cool cover!! Impossible to reproduce in a CD box.

Well, I am still buying vinyl, and more and more. Sometimes I ask myself if I am doing the right thing because I feel to be more and more "alone" and sometimes I need to share my interest in vinyl with all from this board who love vinyl (Giovanni how do you feel?)
Yesterday I was in a summer party on the beach and I saw a DJ spinning. So I asked myself: how's he spinning? CDs or Vinyl???? So I went to the consolle and what did I see? ........ooooooaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh......
TERRIBLE CDs CONSOLLE!!!!!
