Default CD storage

Don't know whether this is appropriate for this section, but does anyone know if CDs should only be stored in a crystal case. I ask because I tend to throw the crystal cases away & keep CDs in those zip-up carry cases that store dozens of discs to save room & keep dust off them. Someone said that this could damage CDs in the long-term; is there any truth in this?

This is right there in the article under the "facts box"

4. Return discs to their plastic cases immediately after use.
5. Store discs upright (book style) in their cases.
6. Store discs in a cool, dry, dark place with clean air.

I’m sure you could find other 'slim' line cases that cuts the storage space necessary in half, but you'll need to loose the 'insert' material; Personally I would never get rid of any CD/DVD original case because for me the art work (and info) is also part of the experience , but that's just me.

Another point to consider is that in the future if you decide to trade or sell any piece of your collection the value will be greatly compromised without the original material

But it also says that taking them out of the case leads to bending the disc which is very bad for it. It's confusing isn't it? I always keep the artwork/info & just throw the case away, & I can't ever imagine selling any of my collection as it keeps me sane!

BTW guys, did you find any form of decent CDs storage? I mean, those metal towers we see in stores tend to get the cases stuck, and the more "arty" designs don't protect them from dust.
For me, the best way is a "CD library" following the lines of a book library (and made of wood!). Would like to hear your choices.

I don't know about long, long term, but I've had many cd's in one of those CaseLogic cases since about 1994 and I haven't had any problems.

Default case logic...

I suppose if you leave them at home then you are better off than taking them out to gigs like I did.

Slowly, from flipping the pages back & forth to shuffling the different books around, I started to notice tiny holes in some of my discs--mostly CD-R.

So, be careful.
