Default Audio to computer

Hello, help needed!

I do not know much about transferring audio to pc. I know I need a soundcard, but what kind of?

I planning to transfer vinyl to cd and would like as good saound quality as possible, with reasonable price...

There's no soundcard in my laptod. I just saw an outside soundcard by Creative which is plugged in to the usb connections, it was about 65 €/$. Could this be it? Or do I need some overpriced heavyduty pro soundcard to achieve full sound.

Mon Dieu, I feel dumb :o

It need not be too expensive, but I recommend against anything by Creative if you're concerned about sound quality. Creative products -- despite their claims -- are designed for gamers and not serious audio production. Go to a store that specializes in music technology (not just computers) and ask around. You probably just need something with 2 inputs and 2 outputs, which shouldn't set you back too much. I use an M-Audio 2496, although this is a PCI card and not suitable for a laptop. However, I do believe they make USB interfaces as well.

If you already have a CD-Recorder (Non-PC) you can record onto CDR's and then transfer them to your laptop. Use a program like Cool Edit (Now known as Audobe Audition) to "clean" the file (hissing, popping, surface noise) and you can also use the software to enhance the sound of the file.

If you don't have the above, then Graham's suggestions are right on target. Do your research well before you commit to anything, nothing worse than winding up with equipment that doesn't suit your needs.

Good luck!

Thank you guys :D

No, I don't have a cd recorder. I think that using the computer would be cheaper and getting a seperate cd-recorder is a just waste of gear.

I think that one rca input and usb/firewire output is all I need.

Just curious, in md and cd there are D/A converters, how is it done in the soundcard? I would think the same way. But what things do I need to check out, when I want to make sure the audio sound is good, i.e. not lacking in frequencies, dynamics or so.

Just want to konow something before I go shopping
