A paper disc that can hold up to five times more data than current DVDs has been developed by Sony and another Japanese company.

The disc is 51% paper and could offer foolproof security...

Right there with you on the head-scratching front, Bernie. Read about it in the Afterdawn newsletter on Sunday and forgot about it instantly. First, degradable DVDs - now this? They're obviously so far ahead with DVD technology now that they can afford to mince about with daft concepts, which have no real use to most people. In the meantime, we're still only on single-sided, 4.7gig storage capable, blank media capacity (in the UK, at least). Excuse me for not caring!

The paper discs are also expected to be cheaper to produce than current DVDs.

One of the big reasons I went to CDs and DVDs from vinyl and VHS was because of durability, along with sound and picture quality, of course. Paper DVDs? :o Cheap? Maybe. Durable. I doubt it. And what happens when I accidentally crumble up my 25 gigs of data thinking it's waste paper? I'm with you, Forrrce and Bernie. I don't see the point, unless you just want to prove it can be done. Big whooop.
