CD burning/playing problem.

When I try to burn or play a CD on my Marantz CDR31 recorder, I get a message on the screen 'NO Disc'....does anyone know why I see this message and is there anything I could do for starters to fix the problem?

I have many more Disco records to burn onto CD....I NEED HELP!

There are two or three things I can think of.

1) Your laser assembly has given up the ghost (if there's no proper laser hitting the disc, it ain't gonna read anything). It may be either out of alignment or not producing the laser properly. Maybe the stepping motor which keeps the laser assembly in line with the CD's groove isn't functioning properly.

2) If you have a cleaning CD, give it a whirl. Might be a speck of dust or fluff is obscuring the laser beam.

3) You've got the wrong type of discs.
Has this happened since you changed over to a different make of disc? Does your recorder need Digital Audio discs rather than plain data discs? Many Philips originated, consumer CD recorders do (and Marantz are Philips originated). Best advice...stick with top of the range, branded (TDK are as good as any) CD-R discs, even though they may be more expensive.
If it's a Marantz CDR631 you have, this shouldn't be a problem SFAIK, as it's a professional model.

Thanks Quinny...and yes it is a CDR631....I have never had a problem with it until recently(I had it for 5 years)....all of a sudden, I put in a CD and the message NO DISC has appeared every since. I tried cleaning it with a CD cleaner, and the same message appears NO DISC...so I don't think #2 is the problem.

I have used a variety of brand blank CD's in the past. The CDR631 has optional disc sources, Optical, Digital etc. to select from...doesn't appear that the CD itself is the problem.

As much as I hope that #1 is not the problem...it appears to be the only logical issue of the 3.

I'm going to get it check out at my local electronic service and see if it can be fixed. Not sure how much it will cost, but I would really like to keep this recorder, because of the quality in sound it records.

Anything else you can think of let me know....I gonna wait until the end of May to have it serviced....in the mean time, I'll have to record my disco classics on my reliable and trusty Pioneer Tape recorder so that I can listen to my disco in my car and boom box!

I take it you have a standalone CD burner. I'd recommend getting a CD burner for your PC, if you don't have one already. Then you can record your music to a hard disk, edit it if need be, and then burn them once you're ready. I don't know if stand alones are as user friendly in that you don't know if you have enough space on the CD when you cue up a bunch of tracks to record, whereas CD burning software on a PC will tell you how much space you have got so you can make adjustments to your track listing or song lengths.
