It's not free but if you might want to use Microsoft Excel. It's an easy to use spreadsheet. I used a combination of Excel and Access to create a database but Excel alone is just fine.

OK, I have just installed a brand new computer after my old, twice fried and restored Gateway finally oozed its last bit of silicon. And, as a result, I have lost my complete collection which I had captured in Davilex Music (which I think I bought in 1999...).

I was so proud because I had only completed the WHOLE @#$%^^ collection into it perhaps a year ago. So we have to start from scratch.

I still have Davilex, and it works even on this new, XP equiped machine. And I like the fact that it has a very searchable database function including searching for tracks, even if they are from compilations. It also allows you to ad fun things like text and pictures, and even music samples. But it is obviously getting a bit outdated and although you can export the database to Excel (which I did, but not the complete collection :-( ).

So my question is, what "off the shelf" programs do other users recommend, and is there by any chance a program that allows IMPORTING from Excel (that would safe me a lot of time recreating the database).

Any recommendations beyond Excel much appreciated. Warning: I am not very technical... so it needs to be pretty much "plug 'n play".

I took a look at Media Monkey but to be honest, all the mp3 playing support isn't anything I need at all. Also it seems to supporting digital media formats only. At least I couldn't find anything about vinyl records mentioned on the site.
What I'm really looking for is a program like Catraxx, but free. It has all you really need but I don't wanna fork out $40 for it + having to pay additional money everytime an upgrade is released.
Does such an application exist? I've been searching all over but haven't found anything yet.

Try Music Collector from Collectorz.com.You pay once initially and upgrades are free.I've used it to catalogue my vinyl collection and it works great. It has a great search engine that allows you in some cases to download the pertinent Lp information from various sites automaticly. In a number of cases you may need to download the CD equivalent of the Lp and edit out the bonus or remix tracks that are included on the CD.They have a free trial download for you to evaluate.8-)
