Default Insurance

Yes - I did take out additional and specific insurance for my collection. As I have moved all over the world in the last 15 years (from Holland to London to NYC to Tokyo to Düsseldorf and soon to Berlin) I thought it would be a good precaution to insure myself. It was NOT cheap because of the mobility of my job...

What is even worse is that it is almost impossible to value your collection, or (WORSE) having to replace it. The latest trip my collection took was from Yokohama harbour to Bremen harbour, and then overland to Berlin where it sits (allegedly) safely in a wharehouse until we find a house there.

Any part of this trip could have easily gone wrong - it is apparently not that hard to miss that sunken luxury cars cargo ship in the Northsea seeing as it has been hit by 4 other ships since it sank after a collission!

Anyway, I am insured... but I would have to take a year's vacation and work full time to find everything back via the net and other means.

PS I can not believe that my old topic is still alive... Just shows you the strength of a good topic headline.

[quote="Steely Dan"]I remember reading with interest about everyone's collections on this thread a few months ago & at the time wondered how you all feel about security regarding your collections, as I live in quite a high risk inner city area quote]

i also live in "a high risk city" { NYC } but what concerns me more is water or fire damage..having lived in 2 diff buildings where water pipes burst...and so i do have specific insurance to cover my collection. when the water pipes burst at one apt building { on New Years in fact !} it didn't touch my collection but i did collect nicely for the damage that was done. Keep RECEIPTS ! and know how many records u do have ...all you guys in above post who don't know how many records u have would be screwed by the insurance company !! ....and have a reasonable idea on how much it is worth.

Could you not have 4 collector friends make receipts for you for xxxx records of some genre then file them in case you need them.

Gee if I had as many as Giovanni's I'd be in heaven. All this vinyl is making my mouth water, lol.

The person above that mentioned that they had LP's from 1976-1981, could you make me a copy of them? (just kidding )

My collection is a wide range of music, mostly R&B/Soul/Disco.

I started buying records in 1971. My first record was "One Man Band" on 7" by Three Dog Night :D .

I thought I was I was a freak still having all my records. Most of my friends thought that I'd sell them when CD's came out. NO WAY!!!!!!!!! 8) 8) 8)

Using Jack's method I have approximately:

1100 LP's
2000 12"
1200 7"
800 CD's ?? guessing (Not counting the DJ record club I joined to do my shows.)

I haven't updated my data base in about 6 years... I have to start over cause I got lazy

Default I'm buried in vinyl!!! 18,000+

I've gone off the deepend fellas I've got at least
18,000+ records, most of which are stuffed in the hundreds
of "borrowed" milk crates from the generous folks at
Safeway. I used to work there hehe:)
I use the big rectangular ones that hold 2 gallon milk jugs.
I stack them vertically 4 high until they cover all walls.
I call it the "archive", everything from disco, funk, soul, rock,
house, hip hop, etc etc.. too much
I'm patiently waiting for any kind of upturn in the Ebay
vinyl sales market, so I can "lighten" the load. Just
keep an eye on Ebay seller:billyblackwood I've got
some goodies ready for good homes.

just keeping this thread alive....I recently looked through my cellar and found a whopping 1400 records stored away that i completely forgot i owned / or thought were missing.

Which brings us to to my collection which has something like 4-5000 records in total. That being 90 % 12" rest albums. But the size of the collection changes all the time, i keepo selling and buying all the time - at one point volume was the thing, but nowadays im trimming it more and more to get more space.

I do have quite a few CDs mostly stuff i already got on Vinyl but i cant count it as a part of my collection... since its not on vinyl.

Most remarkable change since since since i started playing as a DJ 20 yrs ago is the arrival of the Ipod.
Nowadays i only play "casual" when im Djing so i dont really have that "must beatmix" flashing i front of my eyes anymore so the Ipod is REALLY as NICE little gadget to bring a long when im playing...

All i got with me now is one bag of records (40ish) and my two Ipods full of classic tracks.
No more heavy bags and broken backs.

How did you lose track of almost 1500 records?! I could see 20, 30 maybe even 50, but 1400! I'm glad you found them as there must be some gems.

The iPods are great and have forever changed how we listen to our music. How do they hold up at a gig? I'll need more than 40 Gigs so hopefully the 4G's will sport a larger capacity model after Christmas.

Indeed i found alot of records i considered lost or stolen.

Georg benson give me the night
Diana ross upside down
Keni burke keep rising to the top
ect.

As for the Ipod they works excellent. The power of being able to find virtually any track within seconds is awsome.
However the bigger the HD the slower you search and the 30 mb scrolls somewhat slower compared to my 10 Gb version. I prefer less storage and faster scroll search.

As for the mixing with Ipods - you cant pitch with the Ipod, but i manage to "fix" that problem.

I transfered 100 tracks at 120 bmp using the pitch control on my turntable, and with a little trial and error you can time the start just like in the ol days where you were juggeling with tape decks that had a slight delay on the start. And with that 100 tracks i can cover quite alot in my "ipod mix sessions"

Only bad issue is the queing of the tracks, i can pause it at the beginning of the track but when i press pause the track has been going all the time and the pause just muted the track.
I do bring my powerbook sometimes when im REALLY lazy because the playlists in Itunes plays the tracks nonstop with a little 2-3 second mix between every song. I wish that feature was in the Ipods

You beat me to the punch as I was going to ask, why not use a PowerBook since it has a larger capacity and you could run MegSeg...

I'm confused. I don't quite understand why the sheer quantity of recordings one owns would be impressive, I'm more impressed by the quality of the recordings in someone's collection. If you own a few dozen stunning recordings by the likes of Gregg Diamond, the Ritchie Family, Gino Soccio, Lime and the Munich Machine, that would impress ME far more than if you own hundreds of thousand of recordings by the "artists" popular today (but that's just me).

You got a point Ol'Skinflint. I've weeded out some of my disappointing titles and focus on quality over quantity.

I got about 7,000 CDs and about 300 Lps. Almost all range from 1963-present with the greatest focus being on 1963-1997. Over the last decade I've become picky with current releases.

I probably have about 25% jazz, 72% soul, 1% country, 2% gospel. (Disco is in the soul count as well as many other styles like Motown, Quiet Storm, funk, New Jack, hip hop soul, PIR, Memphis soul, northern soul ect.) There's some moderately rare discs but alot of the New Jack and 90's soul can be found easily online.

Put it this way!. if i had a 10er for every time a thieving magpie stole a disco record of mine i probably would be lying in barbados now with a servant fanning me for ythe next 10 years!!.

i now have a very small "few hundred" 12s where as at one point i had thousands of all the disco hi nrg. it happens i should have protected them more, i loved all mu old star point albums and now they are gone....
