I'm cataloguing everything in access and entered about 6000 titles up to now.
Giovanni,

How is Access working out for you? I was considering using this or a software program I purchased called CUSTOMWARE MUSIC MANAGER. I'm a little leary of the CMM program as they haven't made any updates in years. I expected one for Windows XP and still, nothing. I'd have to brush up on my Access, didn't really get into it and never had the opportunity to really use it on my job.

I have used Access professionally to plan our World Cup project and haven't been too impressed with ease of use.

For my music collection I use an off the shelf piece of software called Davilex Music which is much easier, but of course less flexible if you want custom stuff.

Nick,

I used to enter my data in Excel, but a friend of mine suggested to convert anything in Access (it's not difficult to do) for the simple reason that, by using Access, you can make lots of queries regarding the database. I mean, you can ask the program to list all titles by one label, or all productions by a certain Producer and so on.
Of course you need to enter every single datum and be careful to respect the same syntax when entering data (in Access, Salsoul SG-387 and Salsoul SG 387 are two different entities and will be catalogued separately).
The data I am entering are: AUTHOR, TITLE(S), TIMING, FORMAT, LABEL, COUNTRY OF PRESSING, YEAR, PRODUCER, ARRANGER, MIXER/REMIXER, NOTES (id. promo label, test pressing etc), and, believe me, it's a hard work. I've been entering data in my spare time for 2 years now and I plan I need one year more (at least).

Giovanni,

WOW!!! That is Fascinating and Scary. You're giving me ideas that will take me til the "Twelfth of NEVER" to complete. BUT, I would love to have all that info at my fingertips. For example, all "Tom Moulton Mixes" or the John Luongo Remixes in a nice concise little list. Sigh!!!!!....

i have thousands of records ive never even thought to count them, the problem with me is im so disorganised i just have an idea where everything is!i do know i have about 700 c.ds more if you add box sets [easy another 100 i suppose as i have all those stax complete singles that covers 28/29 c.ds!]but c.ds are not my pride and joy.
the biggest surprise for me from what ive read here with u.s collectors is the ratio between 12"singles and 7" singles as i suppose my 7" singles are my pride and joy as i also collect soul/northern soul&motown and a lot of that stuff is not available in any other format and most of my records are u.s copies except motown where im a promo fiend and collect promos from both countries [of the same record]
all that clutters up where i live but i also collect sheet music[not to play but to frame]also music magazines i have most blues and soul magazines from 68 to present, echoes 75 to present, also old club venue posters, northern soul anniversary patches its just my way of investing.and as ive finally been made to admit im addicted to it! this stuff is all over the place some friends came round the other night and i said "excuse the mess" and they said "why are you apologising its ALWAYS like this here!!

I guess i have got about 400 to 500 records (LP's and 12"),
30% disco/funk/soul
30% house/techno
15% hiphop/reggae
10% Drum&bass/breakbeat/2step
10% chill-out/lounge/triphop
and 5% rock/soundtrack/crappy stuff

Next to that i've got another 400 CD's.
60% divided as my record collection and another 40% rock/grunge/punk (legacy of my rebelious teenager days)

I also have about 100 7" single that I bought as a kid before those rebellious teenage days (mostly 80's hit singles )

Hmmmm, also I should start cataloguing my collection, but i'm too lazy for that!   Ah, one of these days, one of theeees.....

peace,
808

Hello friends, I have a room, with my little studio, computer, keyboard, mixer, microphones, etc. and in the wall my records and cds, like books.
I begun a list on Excel and I stopped at 1400, I was bored.
I have around:
550 soul funk and disco lps from 1970 to 80
150 soul from 1980 to 90
100 brazilian and others
150 african, reggae lps
150 latin jazz lps
300 salsa lps from 70īs to 80īs
200 jazz and jazz fusion
150 12"
300 singles
150 soul funk disco compilation lps

maybe 2000 lps at all

cds, around 1000, on the same styles like lps. and more than forty custom compilations of my vinyl on cd, that I can trade with you.

You have been working! Setting up those fields for query... that's where I keep kicking myself. I don't want to go too crazy but I want to be able to search in so many different ways: Title, Artist, Label, BPM, Year... it could turn into complete insanity.

I reckon I have the following:

Vinyl - 800
Cassettes - 500
Cds - 100
Non soul/funk/jazz - 100

Unfortunately, I don't buy as many Cds/vinyl as I would like these days. That can be put down to a combination of (a) wife and (b) school fees

So Bernie, if you are thinking of getting married ... WATCH OUT!!!!

My collection is about 700 vinyl records (Lps, 12" and 7"); 800 CD's.
All of them are SOUL/DISCO/FUNK records from 1970 to 1985.

Peace

Default Mine is 6 meters

This topic is really coming in handy to show my wife i'm not mad ! (see, honey there are people withe even more records.....)
She got a little upset when we rolled in 12.000 12" i bought from a disco that wen out of bussiness after 22 years, kept about 700 really nice ones and threw out the rest. :(

Vinyl here is about 6.5 meters so that should be about 2200 pcs divided into ~500 lp's and ~1700 12" mostly from 79-88.
CD's about 2000 and growing............

I'm working on an Access database for my records with extensive search capabilities, it takes some sql knowledge though to get it all done, try and get my colleagues to participate.......

Wow guys, I can't imagine what having 1000 records is like, much less 5000 or 10000! I have about 300 which I keep inside 4 plastic racks. What a pain in the butt they are to haul around!

I've basically abandoned them though, they're in my parent's house. All my music is now in MP3s -- much more portable and durable.

Regards,
Alvaro

Yes, I understand you can't imagine what a great sensation give us (who were there then) to hold all those plastics!!!
But, believe me, if you are into disco because you have grown up with disco (like me and many people in this board)
you have to hold the plastic, Mp3 won't work

Yes - finally a place where we can bragg about our music collections.
:D
I've collected music since the mid 80s and I own about 1200 Lp's and 12". I also have about the same amount of CD's.
It is mostly Soul/funk, Disco, Fusion and straight ahead jazz.
I'm very proud to announce that I do not own even one single rock album  8)

for catalouging I use Musifind pro. A pretty good SQL based system originally made by a DJ. I tend to be very critical about database systems, since I'm a librarian by profession but this one work without too much of a hassle.

I remember reading with interest about everyone's collections on this thread a few months ago & at the time wondered how you all feel about security regarding your collections, so as it's been revived I'll ask! I'm paranoid about anything happening to my precious collection as I live in quite a high risk inner city area & actually keep alot of my stuff at my dad's place 50 miles away!
Do any of you have any special insurance arrangements for your music collections? Of course I'm assuming thieves would actually be interested in my music collection; although I love disco, most criminals would look at my stuff & think 'what the hell's this shit!!!' & leave it where it is!
