As a young kid in the early 80's I bought vinyl because that's the only thing there was. In the late 80's I received my first CD player, so i switched to CD's.
As a teenage boy i bought even more CD's, but when i went to university mid-90's I switched back to vinyl! I did this because back then, VINYL WAS CHEAPER THAN CD's.
A cd costed 800 belgian franks, but the same album on vinyl was only 450 belgian franks. So that was almost half the price, which seemed like a great deal for a student with a small budget!
And today, the prices of cd's haven't dropped a bit, but the prices for vinyl have DOUBLED, costing sometimes more then the enhanced-special-bonus CD. Even a 12" maxi cost more than a cd single these days.
An absolute nightmare, because i'm hooked on vinyl!
I think these prices are being raised automatically to cash in on the current vinyl-buying trend with all the youngsters who want to be a dj.

Who else does still buy new releases on vinyl on this forum? and is it as expensive in your country as it is here in belgium?

Believe it or not, I still purchase vinyl. The only CD that I ever purchased was Busta Rhymes Genesis CD. The reason was that a young lady came into Vinyl Mania Records looking to sell her used CD because Pass The Courvoisier (feat. P.Diddy) Part II wasn't on the album. I bought it from her for $10.00 to help her out, even though I had the 12" single.

I just bought my first new releases on vinyl since 1990 about 4 weeks ago, this are my local USD prices.

'Wish I didn't miss you' Angie Stone -- $5.99
"Days go by" Dirty Vegas (double 12") $7.99
"I feel Loved" Depeche Mode $8.99

I still buy many old used vinyl off Ebay and unfortuntely have to pay a lot more, especially 12", my last find was a sealed original LP copy of Barrabas' "Barrabas" with 'Woman' and 'Wild Safari'paid $25.00.

I have many cuts on both vinyl and CDs but I always like the Vinyl version better.

I only buy vinyl, but only disco funk from 1976 to 1981. I buy wherever I go for work or for vacation, I ask about records shop... but when I stay at home I often go to GEMM or 21centurymusic.
The most expensive record I buyed is the original 12" version of Johnson Jumpin' from Sound of NY Records: three-digit-number US$.......

I'd like to join the crowd of vinyl-maniacs here: vinyl is still the media of choice for me, and not only due to its special sentimental and/or collector's value. It just sounds better to my ears.. Most expensive 12" I 've ever bought.. It would be DARIO DELL'AERE "Eagles in the night" 3 digits in $US

Hey euro. It's been said in many audiophile mags that we already have hi resolution audio. It's called vinyl. Listening to some my old stuff that are still in good shape seem to confirm that.

I also prefer vinyl as my favourite audio medium.

I only got around to buying a Cd player around 18 months ago (for my fortieth) and at the same time I had to upgrade my hi-fi to accommodate the Cd player, so I bought a NAD amp with a separate phono pre-amp for my records. It has given my vinyl a whole new lease of life!! Nothing sound as satisfying as the deep round bass sound that my system produces when playing a US import 12-inch!!

When I get holds of an original Seventies LP, it is like you are holding a piece of HISTORY in your hands from the actual disco era!! I don't get that satisfaction with Cds....

BTW happy to read that in the UK for 2001, new vinyl sales were up by 15% from the previous year!!!

I think with vinyl, you get an unmistakable "live" sound that is soul-grabbing. We all remember listening to our favorite radio mixes way back in the day. What made it so great, was hearing the occasional crackle/pop/hiss/skip while the record playing. You really felt closer to the whole experience. CDs take away from that experience. I didn't care if I heard any of those things. All that did was verify the presence of the DJ at hand. It confirmed that it was LIVE. You knew there wasn't no tape or cd running on it's own (like you have nowadays during "mix" shows)

Unfortunately , we are in the minority, especially here in the US, you should see peoples’ faces when I tell them that I still play vinyl and that IMO they sound much better, they give me that perplexed look dogs give you when they are confused
