On Wednesday I saw a band play at our local Fourth of July festivities. During the course of the evening they played the B 52's "Love Shack" and I was wondering what others thought of this song?

I personally don't care for it.

Yep. That song is played in Australia a LOT more than YMCA, That's The Way I Like It, I Will Survive, and any ABBA song. I haven't heard of one Aussie retro party bash that doesn't include this flogged-to-death song.

Hello 'Room', The song 'Love Shack' from the B52's is danceable ROCK (aka 'new wave')but far from 'Disco'. Enjoyable in it's timeframe but today I have no intrest in hearing it or owning it!!

I think "Love Shack" IS GREAT!!!!!!

"If a ya see a faded sign
at the end of the road,
that says 15 miles to the LOVE SHACK--

I got me a Chrysler
that seats about twenty
so come along
and bring your jukebox money"

It's about dancing at some funky ole dive. Something I should think we could "relate" to.

There's a mix on the 12" that uses a sample of the Temptations' "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" groove mixed under the "Love Shack" lyrics & melody.

Anyone ever heard that?

Is that vomiting I hear? Remember to flush!!!

Default Love Shack

I think you're both right. It's a very good song, and it's been so completely bastardized by heavy rotation (even now in nostalgie FM) that it's close to unlistenable now.
BTW, The B-52's were a GREAT band. They were the first post-modern band ever!!! (Read their early interviews, read the questions of then-absolutely-disoriented-by-them journalists and LOL!!!) BUT when Ricky Wilson died, they lost their core: that trash rhythm guitar sound that gave the band more personality than anything else. After that, they only were a good dance rock band.
The first album and "Wild planet" (Yellow and Red album for fans) are true rock/pop classics. I'm sure Andy Warhol loved The B-52's, and for a while he must have been the only one who really understood them...

Records like this made me think of giving up DJing. They were DARK DAYS indeed.
Marky:  I don't mean to insult ya honey but, How the hell could you like all the classic disco and Soul music that you do AND like this too?
They just don't belong in the same restaurant, never mind at the same table or on the same plate. Was it camp in some unknown way or is this just the St. Olaf boy coming out?

LOVE The B-52's!!!!

"Rock Lobster", "Dance This Mess Around" ("Do the limburger"), Planet Claire" , "Party Out Of Bounds" ("eeeww--house-a-tosis!!!), "Summer Of Love", "Mesopotamia", "Roam" and "LOVE SHACK" are my absolute faves!!!!

To best appreciate them, one should possess a party spirit and, most importantly, a sense of humor. They are party people frugging to a campy, quirky post-modern beat.

Yep, I agree with Marky: The B-52s are about FUN; this group understands camp and refuses to take themselves too seriously--unlike waaaay too many other performers we could name.

I'd even bet that when all you people who say you hate "Love Shack" (and isn't that a bit of an over-reaction? It's just a SONG, for gawd's sake...) first heard the song, you didn't automatically hate it. I think "Love Shack" is another example of a great song that's been ruined by corporate radio programmers and unimaginative DJs.

Songs like "I Will Survive" and "Funkytown" belong on that list too. Comments...?

Jeff: From the first spin I didn't like Love Shack. For me, this just didn't belong in a discotheque. I was much less fun loving in those days and this just went totally against the grain. Perhaps I would have been more 'loved' had I played it. 8)
