| This is probably the 1st time I visit this part of the discussion board. I am used to go to the DISCO section which I am more familiar. But I've seen the guys from a different HOUSE MUSIC web site discussion board talk about the difference between HOUSE MUSIC and DANCE MUSIC. I was only lurking and of course I wouldn't dare to give any opinion. So I am asking you guys what's the difference between HOUSE MUSIC and DANCE MUSIC (if there is one)?? |

The period that those guys were reffering to was 1989/90/91 when HOUSE went global. They were not being vague to the point of using the word DANCE as a general term for any form of DANCE MUSIC like Disco, Techno or Hi-ngr. Some of them were using the term DANCE MUSIC as a synonym to HOUSE MUSIC. But there were other people in that board who said there was a difference between that early 90's DANCE MUSIC and that early 90's HOUSE MUSIC. Do you get my point? They were not using the term DANCE in a general form... So I was thinking if there is a real difference between both. |

| I would say early 90's house music would be music with a house sound like "Finally" by CeCe Peniston or "Gypsy Woman" Crystal Waters. Music remixed by folks like David Morales, Steve Silk Hurley, etc. There are several variations on this sound such as Hip House, Italian House and so on. Now a song like "Sadeness" by Enigma would be an early 90's dance record but wouldn't be considered house. |

| Songs like Finally and Gypsy Woman were truly house songs created FOR THE DANCE FLOOR. I was there back then. House music sometimes crossed over into the mainstream, as was the case with those two songs. its not like today where Mariah, Whitney, etc make a pop song and it gets remixed for the clubs. We danced to REAL MUSIC back then.........sometimes there were tracks, sometimes they were actual HOUSE songs........just depended on the time of evening or the night. I remember some early 90's clubs during the weeknights in New York, like Sugar Babies.............almost the whole night was vocals. Well, those days are sadly over...........hopefully there will be a resurgence one day |

| IN THE BEGINNING THERE WAS JACK , AND JACK HAD A GROOVE , AND FROM THIS GROOVE CAME THE GROOVE OF ALL GROOVES, AND WHILE ONE DAY VICIOUSLY THROWIN DOWN ON HIS BOX, JACK BODLY DECLARED , LET THERE BE HOUSE , AND HOUSE MUSIC WAS BORN, IAM ,YOU SEE , IAM THE CREATOR, AND THIS IS MY HOUSE , AND IN MY HOUSE THERE IS ONLY HOUSE MUSIC, BUT, IAM NOT SO SELFISH BECAUSE ONCE YOU ENTER MY HOUSE IT THEN BECOMES OUR HOUSE , AND OUR HOUSE MUSIC ! AND YOU SEE , NO ONE MAN OWNS HOUSE , BECAUSE HOUSE MUSIC IS A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE, SPOKEN AND UNDERSTOOD BY ALL , YOU SEE, HOUSE IS A FEELING THAT NO ONE CAN UNDERSTAND, REALLY, UNLESS YOU DEEP INTO THE VIBE OF HOUSE MUSIC , HOUSE IS AN UNCONTROLLABLE DESIRE TO JACK YOUR BODY, AND AS I TOLD YOU BEFORE , THIS IS OUR HOUSE , AND OUR HOUSE MUSIC , AND IN EVERY HOUSE , YOU UNDERSTAND , THERE IS A KEEPER , AND IN THIS HOUSE THE KEEPER IS JACK, NOW SOME OF YOU MIGHT WONDER, WHO IS JACK, AND WHAT IS IT THAT JACK DOES ? , JACK IS THE ONE WHO GIVES YOU POWER TO JACK YOUR BODY! JACK IS THE ONE WHO GIVES YOU THE POWER TO DO THE SNAKE , JACK IS THE ONE WHO GIVES YOU THE KEY TO THE WIGGLY WORM JACK IS THE ONE THAT LEARNS YOU HOW TO WALK YOUR BODY , JACK IS THE ONE THAT CAN BRING NATIONS AND NATIONS OF ALL JACKERS TOGETHER UNDER ONE HOUSE , YOU MAY BE BLACK , YOU MAY BE WHITE , YOU MAY BE JEW OR GENTILE, IT DONT MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN OUR HOUSE , AND THIS IS FRESH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! " JACKS HOUSE " BY JACK aka MR FINGERS ACTUALLY I BELIEVE RON HARDY COINED THE TERM " HOUSE MUSIC " from deejaying in a club in CHICAGO called " THE WHAREHOUSE ", get it . HOUSE IS HOUSE , DANCE IS DANCE ITS UP TO YOU |

I vividly recall running into my long time club buddy, Odis , on Castro Street one day and he excitedly started telling me he'd just come back from Chicago and he was into this music there called "house music" . I didn't know what he meant ..... but in my mind I envisioned some low key form of dance music ... stuff you might play in one's home ..... at a house party .  I was concerned about this because at this time disco was on the wane and many clubs were disappearing. There were less of the smaller clubs and there were "house parties " where people DJ'd right in their own flats .... I also knew that Odis always had his thumb on the pulse of the club scene .... so if he was going this direction ..... :( The term House Music to me sounded like it could be the antitheses of club music , the higher energy stuff ( similar in the way the term *LOUNGE Music" makes me think of music that's more laid back ) ..... .... and I favored the big club ambience of places like The Saint or The Troc... places that pumped big bucks into fantastic lighting and killer sound equipment ..... atmosphere ... I had no idea that what Odis was describing was basically much of the disco music that was then already being played at The Troc .... and was just being given this "new" name ..... that's my story on this one :) ...... ***** |

| Not everyone understands house music. It's spiritual thing, a body thing, a soul thing. :) |

| It is safe to say that on a dance music radio station, you can hear anyone of these styles, hence it is all dance. Disco was never defined in that vain; disco was disco, there was no branching out of it except for distinct sounds and rhythms (philly sound, LA sound, NY sound, Miami sound, etc.). The norm dance sound would probably be techno which is a straight 4/4 beat, like Disco, but strictly technical or technotronic with little or no instruments except a keyboard and/or drums. Garry

Simon Reynolds - Energy Flash - A Journey through rave music and dance culture. Amazon-U.S. | Amazon-U.K. Probably the best book on the subject. It turned out to a vital source when I wrote my main thesis about electronic dance music a few years ago. Highly recommended! |
