I LOVED the B-52's, specially in the first years, with Ricky Wilson in guitar (I think his sound was the true essence of the band). They were the first new wave band not ashamed of doing dance music. And their "Party mix" album was unavoidable at any party I was being DJ. Talking Heads of course I also loved, and I still think "Remain in light" is one of the best rock albums I ever heard. They blend so well the rock and dance cultures on that one (I guess this tells a lot about my own tastes). And I'm still waiting for the CD release of "The name of the band is TH", their double live LP from 1982: side 3 and 4 are from the "Remain in light" tour, with Adrian Belew, and Bernie Worrell on keyboards. The other bands you mention are mystery to me; some of them (Bush Tetras, Certain Ratio) I remember by name only. About new ones, I find "House of jealous lovers" (The Rapture) a good song, kind of "rebellious dance music", however rebellion itself makes it belong more to the rock culture than the dance world. Dance music is all about hedonism, if you ask me. Certainly The B-52's fitted that bill better.

I got into 'proper' dance through this sort of stuff over 20 years ago. I still collect it. If you're after recommendations (old and new) I can give them to you. The best new record in this vein is Mu's Chair Girl on Output (produced by Maurice Fulton).

These names bring back some memories. I especially love the stuff on the ZE label. Back in those days Material was one of my faves. Their song `Ciquiri` still is one of my best loved songs from this era. Lizzy´s `Press Color` album is awesome. In short, don´t ignore this genre and era! (with the hottest music between 1979-1982 IMHO)
