Default Sarah Vaughan--the new Grace Jones???

Yeah, I know one's DEAD, the other's BIONIC....

BUT-----If ya like Grace...listen to the Gotan Project remix of Sarah Vaughan's "Whatever Lola Wants" from the Verve Remixed 2 CD.

The instrumentation is so reminiscent of Grace's early Island Records period and the accordian part is straight out of "I've Seen That Face Before (Libertango)". :D

Stunningly effective remix of a 50's classic that would work well on a dance floor today. At least for Jussi's cocktail crowd.

This year I got most of Grace's albums for Island and both "Warm leatherette" and "Nightclubbing" are always near my CD player. When I put them for some of my friends to listen, everybody marvels at how good and modern they sound. Curiously, DJs and FM programmers seem to not have a clue about this.

I think Grace Jones has suffered from a love/hate attitude her entire career.I enjoy her music more today than I did in the early years.I think the fact that her music was not embraced commercially as other divas such as Gloria Gaynor or Donna Summer hampered her musical career. She wasn't vocally as strong as some of these.Nontheless she had a huge following in the gay community.

Default Verve

Well if that song from divine Sarah is well remixed i have to get the album! I wouldn't compare the voices of Grace and Sarah though 8) I've been sceptical, becouse I'm not a big friend of the remixes of this old songs for too many reasons. I need to check this though! I just adore it when Sarah sings:
"There's no exception to the rule, I'm irresistible you fool, so give in..."

The three Grace's early eighties albums are so great! The production is just superb right from the covers to the sound engineering. They should belong to the bible of every 80's enthusiast or dj.

If u like Grace's early 80's LPs, check out Gwen Guthrie's 2 LPs that were also produced by Dunbar & Shakespeare (especially 'Portrait' from '83) as they have a similar brilliant sound (& Ms.Guthrie could sing! )

Yeah, of course, Sarah Vaughan is the GREATER singer (Grace is more of a ICONIC BIONIC personality)....BUT this remix is totally done in the style of "I've Seen That Face Before (Libertango)" and it ROCKS!!!!

Haunting Gypsy Swing!!!!!

Try it...maybe you can download it and listen????

Yes I will definately check the verve thing out.

Steely Dan: I didn't know (or remember) they produced Gwen as well! I'm not very familiar with her other than the Ain't nothing going on but the rent and that album, Larry Levan mixes by the way. Could you please name the albums you recommend, so I could check them out faster? :D Yes, I really like her voice!

There is nice video of the Aint nothing... sunshine and swimminpool, if I remember correctly 8)

As far as I remember Sly & Robbie produced both "Padlock" and "It Should Have Been You"...but my memory may be playing tricks on me :-?

'Padlock' was a track on the 'Portrait' LP from '83 (later covered by M People in '94) & 'It Should've Been You' was from the previous year ('82). Both LPs are totally stunning IMO & I much preferred these to her later more commercially successful stuff like the 'Good To Go Lover' LP from '86.
