They shoulda added something by Ella Fitzgerald and something by Barbra ("The 1st Album") & Donna Summer ("Once Upon A Time")--but then it woulda been TOOOOO GAAAAAAAAY, I suppose.
I thought "Bad Girls" was in there, but it isn't. You'd think one of the top-10 selling LPs of the 70s would've made it, but evidently not.

George Michael's "Faith" is in there, although I think artistically "Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1" is miles above it.

Pink Floyd's "Piper At The Gates Of Dawn" is another one that I can't believe made the list. I have never understood the fuss with Barrett-era Floyd. This stuff is so utterly ridiculous... lyrics that sound like nursery rhymes on PCP, and clichéd production with everyone making funny noises with various body parts on top. Seriously, you guys...

I absolutely agree with you on this one, my friend. In the mid-80s snobby critics subscribed the unlikely theory that psychedelia-Floyd was better than prog rockers Floyd. Incredible! :o

Marky, you mention several compilations that made the list. That's another point to mention: why so many compilations, specially with black artists? They even included a Bob Marley compilation! That way Beatles "62-66" and "67-70" should have been at the top.
Let's face it, if many bands were more powerful in singles than in albums (even some whiteys, like The Who), well, then they shouldn't make it in a Best Albums list. RS should do another list with "best composers" or "hitmakers" or "best songs". But the list was about ALBUMS, not "The best of..."

I like this list for a few reasons.... because they ventured out and listed pretty much all genres from all generations... I don't agree with them on several of their choices..

LABELLE'S - NIGHTBIRDS? that LP is not as good as OHIO PLAYERS - HONEY come on now...

I betcha only 10 members of the magazine put a list of LP's together and they picked out their top 200. To be cool, they listed a few R&B, Jazz & Country just to round it out...

The only way to view this is to be happy if your favorite LP made the list. which mine did not :P

Well, they included "Greatest Hits" compilations in their listings...so I guess I have no problem with that. Would you grab 6 Al Green cds or his "Greatest Hits" if you were gonna travel or goin to a party?

Same with Aretha and The Supremes & The Temps. The collections of the singles are the "MUST HAVES", IMHO.

The Beatles were different, I think. Their LPs were more in the concept vein and often didn't feature their singles which were released separately, at least in the U.S. "Rubber Soul" had no singles; neither did "Sgt. Pepper" or "The White Album" as I recall. The Beatles "hits compilations" aways suffer in comparison to the original LPs , IMHO. You don't want anything left out. You want the next song to be the one from the original LP. At least that's the way I feel when I listen to them. :P .

I can't answer this one because I only have Al's GH 1 & 2  But my point is: can a compilation be considered an album? Then, why choose an old vinyl compilation (i.e. Al Green's) and not a box? Well... maybe because a box is not ONE album but several CDs. Or because then this would be mainly a boxed sets list? Anyway, to quote Marge Simpson: "mrrmmmm!" :-?

I can't agree in Aretha's case. Her 4-5 first Atlantic albums are pure gold. How can you get "Darn that dream", "Don't play that song" or her magnificent take on "People get ready" otherwise? No no no no! :o
(Obviously all this is blah-blah, but I'm in a rant mood today. Don't worry )

OK, but surely it wasn't that way with all Beatles albums prior to "Rubber soul". I wouldn't call "A hard day's night" a concept album...

I also think that way, but many people think different about "62/66" and "67/70". In fact, I remember a CD Review poll asking its readers what albums not yet on CD they wanted the most to be released in the format (this was around 1991). Guess which were Top 1 and 2? Yes, "62/66" and "67/70". The EMI staff must have read that, because 1 or 2 years later both comps were released as 2 CD sets.

Nano, I agree with you that having the indivdual Aretha or Al Green LPs is great...but you can get "most" of the classic singles and other LP cuts on their box sets.

I have bought the original LPs
Then the Cd versions of the original LPs
Then the "Greatest Hits" compilations
Then the box sets.
Then the repackaged versions of the above.

Yeah, I'm in debt.
