Default The disco sound of 2003!

Well unbelievable as it may seem, disco music seems to be back in a big way!
There is so much good stuff around these days that it's hard to keep track of it all!
I never ever thought the disco sound would ever come back again after it's hey day in the 70's & 80's and i thought it was gone for good, but after hearing alot of the soulful disco/house music that is around and what is coming out of the USA & the U.K on the underground scenes in both countries-i really am stunned and long may this revival continue!
Has any one been buying those "Head Kandi" and "Stereo Sushi" compilations albums that have been around recently? such fab soulful/house/disco type stuff on them which is a joy to listen to!

I gotta agree with you...disco is alive and living well in various musiques. Check out "Move Your Feet" by Junior & Senior, for a bit of novelty disco that makes you wanna boogie down.

The Hed Kandi series is supreme...

To those of you who were infants during the 1970's or weren't even conceived yet....it may seem like DISCO is back---but, if you were alive and dancing then.....it's NOT!!!!!!!!

It was, for a brief period, THEE POPULAR music of the day. Played everywhere.....not just in clubs. It was the N-Sync/Backstreet Boys/Britney/J-Lo/Christina stuff back then.

Youre right Marky, disco was so mainstream in the 70's. Village People were the boyband of the day! I love that 70's stuff more than anything as you know, but I must admit that I liked it in the 80's & 90's when it went more 'underground' 'cos people treated it with more respect then. I wonder why people hate popularity so much?

I am a disco purist as you all know by now. But, the topic title is "2003 disco sounds" and I can agree that there are some disco-like sounds out now. You won't find them in the boy-band crap though or Christina or J. Lo.

Heck, I just got to the point where I could admit there were some disco-like sounds after 1979, but I won't go so far as to call it disco, which was a once in a lifetime feeling that appeared every week until December 31, 1979.

Nicky mentioned 1986's "Fascinated" by Company B. Yes, YES YEEESSS!!!! Now THAT had a disco sound. So did Sylvester's 1982 hit "Do You Wanna Funk."

So tell me, what is the name of a new song that sounds like either of those, hmmmmm? Is there anything?
When I posed the question on another thread asking for more songs from the 1980s that had a similar sound to Kelly Marie's "Feels Like I'm in Love" did anyone answer with Brainstorm's "Lovin Is Really My Game," which is in that same disco-vein? No, someone said "Slow Hand" by the Pointer Sisters, which is not what I meant at all. That one's too slow. Please give us some more examples of 2003 disco-like cuts -- really disco-like, not just because you enjoy it - but because it really sounds like disco did.

Well, I just discovered this group named Next Evidence. Don't know much about them but their track "Morning Breeze" is really something. Real strings and drums (a real rarity these days) and a early Chaka khan feel to it.

Also, DJ Tonka's "Keep Climbing" should be mentioned here allthough it's more electro-funk sounding. Could have been made in 1983.

Last but not least, check out "Takes A Little Time" by Les Rhytmes Digitales. it features Shannon and sounds just like "Do Yoy Wanna Get away"

I've mentioned this before but check out Silver Ocean - Lonesome Echo Production on V2 Japan. Real musicians, Byron Stingly guesting on vocals and a lush production. Hey I think even Quinny would like it :-)

Phyllis: So now I'm the bad boy who dislikes all new stuff?
How have I earned this reputation?
I remember writing " I might like 5% of what I hear today as opposed to maybe 30% -40% back in the day". Heck, I've even listened to 1Xtra and liked some of the tunes (but couldn't tell you any of their titles or artists).

Default Filter disco

The last 2 years have seen a rather impressive disco revival (especially in Europe) with "filter disco," which is true to it's 70's roots in many ways. Kylie Minogue's "Love At First Sight," Daft Punk's "One More Time," Roger Sanchez' "Another Chance," Alcatraz "Crying At The Discoteque," Modjo "Lady" and MANY others are prime examples. Even mainstream artists like Gloria Estefan (Metro Remix of "Out of Nowhere") and Jennifer Lopez (Full Intention Remix of "Love Don't Cost A Thing") have had some fine disco flavored outings within the past 2 years. The compilation Global Hits 2002 had quite a few modern disco gems.

Default "Freakin' Disco" comes out next week

On May 20, 2003 John Scofield's new album "Up All Night" is getting released in the USA on the Verve label. It includes a song titled "Freakin' Disco" which is a jazzy disco song. Here's what Scofield said in a press release: "I didn't know how much I liked disco, because I'm from the generation that believed disco killed funk and jazz. Then I started to realize that I loved disco grooves! And the guys play a mean disco beat. We had to do a piece that really had that feel to it." You can find a 30-second sample at FYE.com, and it can be bought with this link -- http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...rniesdiscomusi

I look forward to hearing that Ricky Martin "Relight My Fire" remake sometime, but I don't know where. (Where can it be bought or heard? Maybe it's too early.) Now it's at #19 on the May 24, 2003 Billboard Dance/Club Play chart and since that's an uptrend from past weeks I assume it can get higher.

Marcio, you have good taste; I like that song "The Game of Love" also. Since you are in Brazil, can you tell us if there are any contemporary Brazilian disco groups other than BsB Disco Club?
