| There. I brought it up. Rap music that is. Yes I do like some of it, especially some of the earlier stuff. This topic came to mind because here in the states, California anyway, they are running a Ray Allen commercial. He's a basketball player. The music for the commercial is a song by Gang Starr called Words I Manifest. I have it in my collection and needless to say I like it. So let me start things off with that song along with Symphony by Marley Marl, I'm That Type of Guy by L.L. Cool J, a few songs by Big Daddy Kane and Public Enemy to name a few. _________________ That's it...The rebels are there! [ This Message was edited by: paul on 2002-01-31 18:10 ] |

| I admit I like Old School!!!! Mostly because in almost every old school rap 12", out on Enjoy, Paul Winley, Sugarhill, and small indies from NY, you get terrific funky jams on the B sides |

| I know I'm not a big fan of rap music but the early rap of the late 70's and 80's were the best times for rap which was the breakdance era. Now looking at todays rap, to me most of it should be called "crap" not "rap" especially Enimen. Main reason, a lot of them just talk talk talk to a dead beat rhythm and rap on about pimps, prostitutes and oral sex and they swear their heads off and they love using the word "motherfucker" a lot. It's disgusting. Now looking at oldskool rap back in the late 70's to me rap was at it's best because it was a combination of disco, funk, soul, r&b and rap and they don't go on and on about how they get girls have oral sex with them like the modern rappers do. I've only heard a couple of rap songs of the late 70's and they are the best ones I heard: Fatback Band - King Tim III (Personality Jock) 1979 Sugarhill Gang - Rapper's Delight 1979 I'm unsure whether Fatback Band's "King Tim III" was the first rap song or Joe Bataan's "Rappo Clappo" was the first one. Speaking of "Rappo Clappo" I haven't heard the full song yet but now I'm thinking of it I'll download it from Audio Galaxy. Now in the 80's rap was real big with breakdancing and used 80's synth and beats with the rapping. Some good ones I heard are: Young MC - Bust A Move 1989 (I love that bass) Blondie - Rapture 1980 Mel Brooks - To Be Or Not To Be 1984 M.A.R.R.S. - Pump Up The Volume 1987 Indeep - Last Night A DJ Saved My Life 1982 (The DJ raps near the end of the song) Rock Steady Crew - Hey You 1984 and a few others From memory rap started turing into crap around 1995. I swear that's an awful diabolical year for music, I've heard the worlds most stupidous techno songs that year such as "I Wanna Be A Hippy & I Wanna Get Stoned", "Cotten Eye Joe", "Here's Johnny" etc... Although most of modern rap is crap there are some decent rap songs of today that are likeable, Will Smith's rap isn't too bad since he doesn't go on and on about pimps, prostitutes and oral sex. Anyhow that's my opinion of rap. |

| OH gawd, I've been awaitin' for the rap backlash for sooo many damn years and it's never happened. If they could kill disco overnight...why not rap? (Well, being gay, I DO realize why Disco threatened them so much!) Instead, the hetero white male has embraced the thuggin', rappin', pimpin' lifestyle. I was reminded of this last night when I stayed up waaay too late and caught that MTV tool Carson Daly's talkshow with guests Dick Clark AND Wu Tang Clan (Carson's fave--he so cool!) All these suburban white boys wanna be homeboy thugs or so they gotta pretend. I liked some of the early rap, too. Doug E Fresh's "The Show", Grandmaster Flash's "White Lines" & "The Message", Young M.C's "Bust A Move",Run DMC's "Walk This Way" Heavy D's "Now That We Found Love", the rap part in Rene & Angela's "Save Your Love For Your #1, for example. But after NWA & 2Live Crew hit, rap got UGLY. It seemed a celebration of ignorance and lack of education--just thuggin' and pimpin' and shootin' and braggin'. _________________ Make My Feet Wanna Dance! | **Rap of today is an horrible boring unaudible shit**. Only the real old school connect to disco. In Europe we had only a small "Disco sucks" movement, and when rap came out, it connected itself perfectly to the more funky sound of disco of the end of the 70s. The first raps ever came from a "funk" band like the Fatback (King Tim III) and from a "nothing" band like Sugarhill Gang (Rapper's delight) thanks to smart production teams. Ghetto music came out after. Rap fanatics say that "Rapper's delight" was the end of the beginning and the beginning of the end. But the real death of old school rap came with one of its most celebrate hits, that is "The message" by GM Flash. From "Message" on, rap became crap. |

| I can't stand rap. It's just a bunch of people talking really fast to an electronic beat with samples and/or synthesizer sounds thrown in. To me that's not music. Also rap songs are mainly about killing people, drug dealing, excessive materialism, and fucking and/or beating up women. Sure, not all rap is about those things (you know, gangsta rap), but 99% of it is because that's what sells. I think the only rap that is anywhere near decent is the old-school kind. Also, I hate it that many rap fans think that those who aren't into it are racists. I think that's total bullshit. I'm definitely not a racist (if I was, I wouldn't be into R&B oldies). And I can't stand Eminem. Unfortunately, the race issue is often brought up when rap is, making rap a touchy subject (that's probably why there hasn't been a backlash against rap). I always hear that the reason most rap is about gangbanging and stuff is because the rappers grew up in the ghetto and as a result were doing that, so they write about their "life experience". But rap tends to glorify ganbanging instead of condemning it. Keep in mind that this is just my view of rap. |

| I thought of a few other RAP records I liked enough to buy. I must confess I had forgotten that at one time (mid-80's), I actually did not hate all rap music. So, in addition to the other records I mentioned in yesterday's post, I liked these also: PUSH IT - Salt 'N' Pepa WILD THING/FUNKY COLD MEDINA- Tone Loc JOY & PAIN/IT TAKES TWO - Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT TO PARTY - Beastie Boys JUMP AROUND - House Of Pain GOOD VIBRATIONS - Marky Mark & The Funky Bunch w/Miss Loleatta Holloway A FLY GIRL - Boogie Boys THE ROOF IS ON FIRE - Rockmaster Scott & Dynamic Three I'm amazed to be admitting this, but once upon a time--I DID NOT HATE RAP! However, things have changed...

Unfortunately, the race issue is often brought up when rap is, making rap a touchy subject (that's probably why there hasn't been a backlash against rap). Outsider, The reason why the "race" issue is often brought up when discussing rap is because rappers and many black folks feel that if rap was rock, its abrasiveness, chauvanism and violence would not have been an issue. Why? Because your average rock groups like Motley Crue, Kiss, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Rolling Stones and singers like Ozzy Osborne and Billy Idol have done some CRAZY s**t throughout their careers and continued to be celebrated plus getting richer at the same time. So the average rapper is thinking Hey... rock stars are wild as hell, forever stoned or drunk, sleeping with a posses of groupies/sluts, destroying hotel rooms, fighting, banging up their guitars/equipment etc... so they figured that they can be just as crude, obnoxious, nasty and RICH as the rockers. Two wrongs don't make a right but you know that sex and violence sells in this country! Also there were some that wanted to make a clean record but they "claimed" that the record producers were only looking to promote gangsta-thug rappers. So money talks; therefore, they changed their format. Personally, I don't like rap music either! I used to like rap back in 1979-87. My favorites were Whodini, Doug E. Fresh, Salt & Pepa, The Treacherous Three, Soul Sonic Force/Afrikka Bambaatta, Kurtis Blow, Grand Master Flash and The Furious Five, The Fat Boys and some others. I HATE Eminem! He is by far the worst examples of rap today and Dr.Dre was an idiot to promote him. Eminem's music is like a sewer but much more disturbing! I'm dissapointed at what rap has become but I have to say that some white folks don't like rap music because its black music (whether its clean or dirty). *DISCO DELIGHT* |

I agree. He has to be the worst rapper I've ever heard. What he talks about is so vile, disgusting and extremely crap, and his voice irritates me really bad. Unfortunately my two younger brothers are big fans of his music and they play his music really really loud in the house and it drives me out of my mind, and I'm surprised his music doesn't kill our pet budgies. Also my mother gets pissed off when they play it a full blast. Half the time when I hear his annoying voice and hear the shit that comes out of his mouth I fell like punching his face in (that's how angry I get when I hear his music). One of the worst songs I've heard of his is the one where he goes "Suck my dick". WHY THE HELL DO RAPPERS OF TODAY TALK ABOUT GETTING WOMEN TO HAVE ORAL SEX WITH THEM????? THIS SORT OF RAP IS NOT EROTIC MUSIC, IT'S RAPE MUSIC!!!!!!! His music is so awful that officials in Australia (where I live) were debating whether they'll let Eminem into the country. And the official who was allowing Eminem into Australia to perform his crap, he forbids his daughter to go to Eminem's concert. I don't blame him. I don't know whether Enimen did tour Australia or not but I certainly did NOT attend any of his concerts nor would I ever want to. I have ABSOLUTELY NO respect for Eminem whatsoever. And I bet lots of girls would love to slap and punch his face in too. Eminem is not the only badass crapper around, I remember a few years back I heard a really crappy rap song called "Gangster Boogie". Now when I heard it, the crapper was crapping on about oral sex and all the other filth that comes with it. Now recently I discovered "Gangster Boogie" was originally recorded back in 1975 by a group called "Chicago Gangsters". I downloaded the original song and I must say the original is one excellent funky groove and kicks the modern filthy rap version's arse 1000000 times. I wanna know who was this really really crappy rap group who did a filthy rap version of Chicago Gangster's "Gangster Boogie"? Today's rap music industry is a sad sad world. |

| Most rap sucks; as Frankie Crocker once said: "They rap 'cause they can't sing". Rap is a sign of today's mediocre talent. Haven't you notice that just about anybody with a pretty face and or a nice ass can become a "singer" today. Ofcourse, some of the old skool rap (80's) is ok, such as Everybody Salsa by Modern Romance and Funky Soul Makossa by Nairobe and the Awesome Four. |

| Another thing I want to comment on regarding rap: All rappers get major critical acclaim by the music critics. They (the music critics) claim that rap is the greatest thing to ever happen in music. Have any of you ever read a negative review of a rap album? I haven't. I still think that the reason the critics give rappers rave reviews is that they don't want to be called racists. |

Funky Dude, You've just asked the $$$$MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION$$$$$!! And they have the NERVE to say that their music is art! What is so creative about bragging to the boys about a gang bang or girls lining up to perform oral sex!! I tell you the whole damn thing just irritates the hell out of me!!!!! Any woman who finds this music entertaining needs to have her head examine because its been stuck up her ass!!!! That is why I clash with one of my friends. She hates my music(disco) and I damn sure hate hers(rap). RAPE MUSIC!!!!!!! The most disturbing things I've heard from Eminem's music is his bragging about his desire to kill his mother. The other is him bragging about spiking drinks of 15 year old girls and taking advantage of them then leaving them on their father's doorstep unconscious!!! Last is him poking fun at Versace's murder. We are living in a sick society because that a**hole is making millions off of people who get off on this crap. Outsider, Yes I have read many negative articles about rappers and the poison society says that they're spewing. But the media dosen't want to come off too strong because they don't want to be labeled as racists. That is funny because they don't have any problems printing other negative images about people of color. The only difference is rappers have huge bank accounts and high-price lawyers that will SUE their asses and win!!! The average folk can only protest. *DISCO DELIGHT* |

| Speaking of being labelled racist, when I criticise the rap music that my youngest brother plays especially Eminem, he calls me a racist. How the hell can label me a racist when I like oldskool rap, funk, disco, R&B and soul. I just hate modern rap because it's nothing but pure filth. I personally think that this media should stop being scared of being labelled a racist and just throw in their truthful criticism based on what sort of vile filthy shit these rappers sing and I bet a lot of people will back the media up on that. I personally hope this modern filth crap rap comes to an end and the oldskool rap comes back in, because the old stuff was more fun because it was made to be danced to and for breakdancing and was really likeable. But these days how can anyone dance to Eminem who uses a deadbeat rhtyhm and uses his annoying agro voice rapping on about pure garbage. I just hope Eminem is just a shortlived phase and he retires and never surfaces in the music industry again because he's just pure bad news. But the problem is other rappers will adopt his style and continue on his sort of crap. I can't help feeling that rap is just going to get worse and worse. What would rap/hip hop be like 10 or 20 years from now? |

I definitely agree with this comment. I also don't see how rap could appeal to women when the attitude rappers have towards women is "bitches ain't nothin but hos and tricks". |

| I fully agree with your opinion. Rap or HipHop nowadays is the worst crap I`ve ever heart. Itīs really sexistic, homophob and they really canīt sing. At the late 70ies and early 80ies I enjoyed the stuff from Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster Flash, Kurtis Blow, Prince Charles a.m.o., but it has nothing to do with this stuff from today. Maybe the only exceptions are Miss Elliot and Busta Rhymes, but Iīm really not inte- rested in gang-wars, stupid macho-attitudes and more & more stupid messages...
