| Hey what’s good everyone? I just came by to let everyone know that I am starting to get into Reggaeton music and try start to make myself love the music more. So I just want to know who your favorite Reggaeton artist is right now or who are some good artists that I should listen to? My co-worker at umgd told me to start listening to an artist by the name of Notch (myspace.com/notchonline) because that’s his favorite artist. Have you guys heard of him before, or what do you guys think about his music? Anyhow I just wanted to know what you guys thought about Notch before I buy his album that’s coming out in May 22 entitled “Raised by the People”. |

| Unfortunately, this is not the best forum to discuss reggaeton :-/, I've discovered this sound when I was working in the Caribbeans nearly 3 years ago, when I heard "Gasolina" from Daddy Yankee for the 1st time, I knew this was gonna be a hit back home later on, well, 6 months later it was playing everywhere in Mtl. :-) I like groups like Daddy Yankee, Don Omar, Hector y Tito, Tego Calderon, Lorna, etc. I am not aware the of Notch release.

| Here is an interesting Reggaeton article on today's Herald, including some clips of songs that identify the style. according to the author Reggaeton is not doing well at the moment. (after a few days you may have to register to read it) Reggeaton's unrealized dreams Although I tried it, I never got into this style to much at all, (with the exception of maybe "Gasolina") this music reminds me to much of Rap music. I've heard a few Latin musicians complaining in interviews (Albita)that Raggeaton is killing Latin music, especially Salsa, because it is displacing the traditional Latin musician, this detractors claim that as with Rap , the composer only need a computer and a beat box, and after a while , all the songs sound the same. I guess times are changing.... |

| Thanks for the article Reggaeton is doing to salsa, merengue, etc what disco did to rock music in the 70's Just as what reggaeton is about, disco was mostly about sex especially when introducted in early years and will eventually die like disco did, well for the vast majority.

| For those that might care to learn a bit about one of the most enduring form of "Dance music" in the world.. here the author of this piece from The Miami Herald touches on the History of Salsa that evolved right next to Disco music in NYC and how it is fighting back against Reggaeton. They posted some music clips too, "The demise of (Salsa music) is greatly exagerated" "Says Ned Sublette, a Latin music historian and musicologist in New York: ``We don't have any other music that does what salsa does. It's music for head, heart and hips. We have this idea that dance music is dumb -- boom, boom, boom. Salsa is anything but that.'' "A lack of commercial attention from record companies may have been good for salsa, forcing musicians to focus on playing live and on the music, rather than on selling themselves to labels or coming up with songs that fit on radio. Ed Morales, Latin music critic for New York Newsday, knows musicians who work out their songs by dancing to them." I need to pick up that "Spanish Harlen Orchestra" CD!!!!! |
